BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (October 8) - Bobby Hogge of Salinas, CA took the lead when race-long leader Mike Johnson spun on lap 23 and held on to take the $2,000 Late Model feature win on the first night of the 25th Annual Bud West Coast Dirt Nationals at Bakersfield Speedway on Friday night. Willamette Speedway champion Trevor Glaser of Tangent, OR crossed the finish line for a $1,000 second place finish followed by Rob Sanders of Bakersfield, CA who earned $700 for third. Fast qualifier Steve Drake of San Luis Obispo, CA and Clay Daly of Watsonville, CA rounded out the top five.
Drake, sporting a change from his familiar yellow paint scheme to a solid black with red trim, posted the fastest time of 29 qualifiers at 13.042 with Grand Junction, CO invader and 2008 Bud Nationals champion Dean Moore second quick with a 13.079. Glaser, the current Gary Jacobs Memorial Western Rankings leader and two-time champion, rounded the fast quarter-mile oval third fastest at 13.188.
Mike Johnson of Lompoc, CA captured the win in the Dash to earn the pole position for the 30-lap feature. Dino Napier of Corona, CA won the first heat over Daly and John Lowrey. Petaluma Speedway champion Jeff Decker of Morgan Hill, CA raced to the second heat win followed by Chris Shannon and Bill Bartels. Sanders was the third heat race winner over Oregon's Rob Mayea and Jason Papich. Local favorite Brad Pounds of Bakersfield topped heat four followed by current West Coast Late Model Shootout point leader Mike Kirby and Oregon challenger Billy Workman Jr.
Lowrey and Workman Jr. captured the B-Main wins.
The 25th Annual Bud West Coast Dirt Nationals continues on Saturday night with the Late Models headlining for a $3,000 to win 50-lap feature. The Modifieds and Street Stocks will also run feature races on Saturday.
