Bob Burbach MARYSVILLE, Calif. (June 6) - The Western All Star Late Models returned to Paul and Kathy Hawes' Marysville Raceway Park Saturday for their annual stop at the hooked up clay raceway. Chris Shannon led wire to wire in the 30-lap feature event. Ageless "Wild" Willie Horn won the companion MRP Super Stock main event for the second straight time.
Shannon, who's season was going nowhere with a lot of new equipment decided to dust off his back up car and give it a try for the Marysville stop. It was a good decision. Shannon ran away with the "Fast Dash" and the feature in convincing style. However, a monumental tussle was going on behind him featuring the stars of this traveling entourage. With Shannon turning laps faster than he qualified, a wholesale paint-trading session was going on behind him. Ron Bartels, Richard Papenhausen, Bobby Hogge and Mike Johnson slugged it out lap after lap for position.
The hooked up surface presented some unique challenges to this group that generally competes on dusty slicked-up ovals. The MRP clay allowed these 800 horsepower monsters to dig in and rocket around at a dizzying pace. It was an entertaining spectacle of power and speed. A series of yellow flag slow downs kept Shannon within reach, but he just pulled away with ease at every new green restart. If anything, second running Bartels was not as quick as some of the drivers behind him. But he did a great job of taking away the middle to high lines that the others needed to get around him.
After Shannon the quickest cars appeared to be Hogge and Papenhausen. Both drivers were wildly slinging their cars into MRP's high-banked turns. When you are on the edge, sometimes you go over the edge and that's precisely what happened to Hogge and Papenhausen. Papenhausenmade a couple of mistakes down low in turn 4 that cost him positions he would later have to fight for. Hogge went to the top in the turns 3 and 4 trying to pass with momentum. Hogge had the right idea, but didn't stay up high long enough to make it stick. Hogge banged his way around and lost a couple of positions when he got together with other racers and lapped traffic. But, he tried long and hard to go forward. Local star Marysville's Ryan McDaniel came home 6th ahead of Hogge after a quick smooth, mistake free drive to the front.
Shannon flashed under the checkers with a big lead and Bartels stayed 2nd all race long despite the pressure. Pappenhousen wrestled his way back to 3rd followed by Johnson and "Quick" Nick Bartels. Johnny Malcolm, Johnson and Pappenhousen got heat race wins.
