ULMS Media LITTLE VALLEY, N.Y. (July 3) - Chad Valone of Warren, Pennsylvania picked up his first ever Northern Tier Inc ULMS Late Model Series win on Saturday night at Little Valley Speedway in part of the annual Freedom Daze events and going home with a cool $3000 in his pocket.
"The Captain", Jason Dupont and the "Ashville Assassin", "King" Dick Barton would be the front row starters for the 30 lap main event. Dupont would rocket in the lead at the start of the event over Barton. Barton would quickly feel the pressure of Dennis Lunger as Lunger would take his #17L machine into second on lap three. Barton would slide back to fourth on the very next lap as John Lacki would move into third. Barton was still back peddling as Bump Hedman would take fourth from Barton on lap five. Lacki would sweep under Lunger for second on lap six as they came out of turn four. Lunger would lose third on lap seven as Hedman would get by, while Lacki would track down Dupont in the Northern Tier Inc #No7 Rocket. With ten laps in the books, Lacki was all over Dupont, while tenth place starting Chad Valone made his way to fifth with fifteenth starting Bob Close now in sixth.
Lacki would take over the lead from Dupont on lap eleven as Valone was now in fourth as Close was pressuring Lunger for the fifth position. Close would take fifth over from Lunger on lap fourteen as the #04 CRS house car was on the move. Meanwhile Hedman would take second from Dupont as it appeared the Dupont machine's tires were beginning to fade. Jeff Hoffman all of sudden showed his face in the top five just after the halfway point. One lap later, Hoffman would slow and Barton would slip back into fifth over Close as the two veterans were having a torrid battle for the top five spot. Valone would catch the lead duo of Lacki and Hedman and would make it a threesome battle for the lead. Close once again would re-emerge as he now was back to fourth as Dupont was now sliding back to fifth.
With ten to go, Dupont went back by Close to regain fourth and on lap twenty -two the yellow lights flashed for Pete Alspaugh. As the field was lining up to get the one to go from starter Johnny Powell, fifth place running, Close went pit side real quickly for a unidentified problem. As the field went green, Close would get caught on pit road keeping him from rejoining the field, ending a solid night. Valone restarted the event and jetted away from Lacki as Hedman and Dupont waged battle for third over the final laps, but the #2v of Chad Valone would motor away to capture his first ever Northern Tier inc ULMS Late Model Series win over Lacki, who had a superb run for second over Bump Hedman, Dupont and Barton rounded out the top five. Following Barton was Brent Rhebergen, Lunger, Dereck Frank, Dave Norton and Jeff Dayman rounded out the top ten.
The ULMS Late Models will be back in action next Friday night at Raceway 7 for a $2000 to win event and then race the next day at Stateline for a $5000 to win show that will feature a American Racer Tire only tire rule. For more information, check out www.unitedlatemodelseries.com.
