Dan Robinson GREENWOOD, Neb. (September 26) - Henderson, Colorado's Kelly Boen continued his assault on the 2009 racing season by winning the Cornhusker Classic at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska on Saturday night. The $3,000 victory was his fifth O'Reilly MLRA win of the season. Boen worked his way from his twelfth starting spot before finally passing Marquette, Nebraska's Kyle Berck with two laps to go. Berck held on for second with Coffeyville, Kansas' Al Purkey crossing the line in the third spot. Giltner, Nebraska's Al Humphrey had a great run to finish in fourth while Leon Zeitner rounded out Top 5. Bryant Goldsmith, Jason Friesen, Justin Zeitner, John Hampel, and Jason O'Brien crossed the line in sixth through tenth respectively. Event Images
Defending Series Champion and current MLRA Point Leader John Anderson blew an engine early in the feature relegating him to a 22nd place finish. By virtue of his solid third place finish in the feature, Al Purkey has now closed the gap on the point leader with just three races remaining. Anderson's lead was 58 going into last nights event. Once the updated points are tallied, Anderson's lead will have shrunk considerably heading into next weekends events at Lakeside Speedway.
Boen's Rocket Chassis is Powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine with sponsorship support from Road Runner Fabrication, AFCO Racing Products, Intensitee Custom Racewear, Race Wise Dirt Track Chassis School, Peterson Fluid Systems, and Performance Bodies. The Feature was worth $3,000 to win. Boen is the 4-time and Defending O'Reilly NCRA Champion. The win was Boen's 12th career MLRA Feature win and fifth of 2009.
Heat Race Winners included Al Humphrey, Greg Larsen, Mike Collins, John Anderson, and Craig Prebel. Consolation Race Wins were captured by Allen Zeitner and Denny Woodworth. MLRA Provisionals were awarded to Jason Bodenhamer and Chris Smyser while Jason O'Brien and Bryant Goldsmith utilized the NCRA Provisionals. Track Provisionals were earned by Mike Wiarda and Steve Kempt. Shad Badder gave up his seat to Chris Smyser in the Feature in a noble display of sportsmanship as Smyser had engine trouble earlier in the evening. The MLRA Rookie of the Race went to Archie, Missouri's Matt Johnson. The race was co-sanctioned by the O'Reilly NCRA with Marquette, Nebraska's Kyle Berck capturing the NCRA Championship as this was their final points race of 2009.
