MLRA Media SEDALIA, Mo. (August 23) - The 2008 O'Reilly MLRA Series Champion John Anderson defended the colors of the MLRA by capturing the AAA Missouri State Championships at Sedalia's State Fair Speedway on Sunday night. Drivers from as far away as Minnesota and Wisconsin were on hand, not to mention talented drivers like Billy Moyer, Dave Eckrich, and Will Vaught but there was no denying John Anderson on a beautiful night at the State Fair Speedway.
Will "The Thrill" Vaught started on the pole and finished second while Terry Phillips charged from his 14th starting spot to finish third. Giltner, Nebraska's Al Humphrey was fourth with Tony Jackson Jr. finishing in fifth in only his second night out in a new MasterSbilt racecar. Heat Race Winners were Anderson, Al Purkey, Andrew McKay, Jackson Jr., and Vaught. Consolation races were won by Jason Bodenhamer and Chris Smyser respectively.
Will Vaught led the field to the green flag from the pole and led the early laps followed by Kosiski, Moyer, and Humphrey. The caution flag flew for debris in turn 4 on lap #3. On the restart Vaught continued to lead with Moyer now up to second as the green flag laps clicked off at the super fast Sedalia track. Evan Hubert slowed on lap 14 as he sat up against the Armco barrier in Turn four. As the green flag flew once again, Al Purkey appeared to be the man on the move as he challenged Moyer for second but suddenly pulled off the racetrack with a broken axle ending his night. Moyer also pulled off the track out of his second spot with a flat RR tire setting up the showdown with Vaught and Anderson who had now slid into the second spot.
Anderson shot to the lead overtaking Vaught on the backstretch with 12 to go. Terry Phillips had now moved into third from his 14th starting spot and looked to be ready to contend for the win. The final caution of the night flew on lap 26 setting up a 4 lap shootout with Anderson, Vaught, and Phillips. Anderson jumped to the lead as Vaught appeared to lag back a little. As the battle raced across the start finish line and into turn #1, Phillips dove to the bottom with Vaught shutting the door as the two made contact, but it Vaught coming out ahead with Phillips settling for third.
In Victory Lane, Anderson said, "I didn't know if we'd be a factor or not. We were way too tight in the first 10 laps, and then the track kind of came back to us. It's always a great thing to beat Moyer, though, especially after he snookered me with a couple of laps to go last night!"
Anderson 's MasterSbilt chassis is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine with sponsorship support from Shop Quik Convenience Stores, Turbo Car Wash, Sunoco Racing Fuel, MarCorp Electric, REM Plastic Racing Products, and F.A.I.T.H. (Friends are in the House Youth Team). The Feature was worth $3,000 to win. 44 Cars were in attendance at the Historic 1/2 Mile speedway. MLRA Provisionals were awarded to Mike Collins and Larry Clawson.
By virtue of his strong second place at Lucas Oil Speedway on Saturday night and his win tonight, John Anderson has now taken a 66 point lead over Al Purkey. Joe Kosiski sits in third with David Turner occupying the fourth spot. Centerview, Missouri's Jason Bodenhamer has a lock on fifth. Complete MLRA Points standings will be updated and posted at www.MLRAracing.com.
