Justin Rickett PHENIX CITY, Ala. (April 9) - After some great racing last Saturday that included the Southern Regional Racing Series, it was time for the local drivers to take to the track for a full stock car racing program plus a $500 to win ASA Performance Hobby feature. After a few practice laps and heat races it was time for a special qualifying session for the ASA Performance Hobby division. Setting fast time was Jason Coggins with a lap of 17.21 seconds for the $500 to win feature. In Extreme Power Sports Late Model qualifying, Terrance Nowell put his number 55 car on the pole for the feature with a lap of 15.32 seconds. When the Alabama Rock Late Model feature started it was Terrance Nowell leading the field to the green with Scott Knowles lined up to his outside in second. Coming off turn two Knowles moved past Nowell on the high side to take the lead. Paul Walters followed Nowell in third with Joey Thomas in fourth. On lap six Paul Walters car would lose the right front fender bringing out a debris caution and causing him to pull in the pits ending his night. When the field went back green, Knowles was still in front with a good lead over Nowell and third running Thomas. On lap 10 Knowles had some issues slowing in turn four, allowing Nowell to draw within striking distance. Then in turn one and two Knowles car seemed to still be having problems opening the door for Nowell to take the lead. Knowles dropped back to the fourth spot for two laps but quickly made his way back by Thomas and third place running Pat Wall. Now back in second and the problem seeming to be fixed Knowles tried to close the gap and retake the lead. Unfortunately Knowles would run out of time and Terrance Nowell would hold on to win. Scott Knowles came home second after overcoming some brake issues that caused him to lose the lead. Joey Thomas finished third with Pat Wall fourth and Larry Harrod coming home fifth.
In the Limited Sportsman Division Steven Gaines Jr. led the field to the green with Andy Cook in the second spot. Gaines quickly started to pull away from the field with Roger Arnett moving into the second spot. Jimmy Evilsizer moved past Cook to take over the third spot bringing Joey Eiland with him. With Gaines having a commanding lead the battle was for the second spot as Arnett was doing all he could to hold off the cars of Eiland and Evilsizer. As the laps clicked away Arnett was able to hold off Eiland who made it around Evilsizer for third. With the checkered flag waving Steven Gaines Jr. held on to win for the third time in 2011. Roger Arnett finished second with Joey Eiland third, Jimmy Evilsizer fourth, and Don Knight coming home fifth.
The ASA Performance Hobby cars were trying for a shot at $500 dollars, but first they had to survive a grueling 25 lap feature. Jason Coggins was on the pole with Efrem Holbrook starting second. Coggins led the field to the green with Holbrook dropping in to the second spot. Kevin Bennett was running in the third spot with John Michael riding in the fourth spot. The top four cars would stay in that order until lap 8 when Coggins slowed on the track and pulled into the pits ending his night. Now Holbrook had the lead with Bennett in second. Unfortunately it wasn't a good night to be the leader because on lap 15 Holbrook's car slowed on the track causing him to pull in as well. Now with 10 to go Bennett inherited the lead with Michaels in second. Kevin Bennett would hold on to take the win and the $500 dollars. John Michael's car was able to hold onto second with Efrem Holbrook coming home third, Jason Coggins was fourth, and Tater Holmes rounded out the top 5 in fifth.
In the Bomber division Dylan Knowles led the field to the green with David Osbahr starting second. Knowles quickly pulled out to a good lead with Osbahr in second. Larry Hodnett was running in third with David Bartholf running fourth and Lucas Flaitz in fifth. The top five would stay the same for most of the race. Flaitz was able to make it past Bartholf just past halfway to take over the fourth spot. Meanwhile the top two of Knowles and Osbahr were battling hard on the track. With the checkers in the air Dylan Knowles was able to hold off Osbahr to pick up the win. David Osbahr was second with Larry Hodnett third, Lucas Flaitz fourth and David Bartholf coming home in fifth.
Herbie Donath led the modified cars to the green in there feature with Scott Prins starting second. Donath held the top spot with Prins running second. Jeff Culpepper started fifth but quickly moved into the third spot with Ricky Culpepper running fourth. As the laps started to click off Jeff Culpepper started moving to the front. Just past half way Culpepper was able to pass Prins for second and then Donath for the lead. Truly the car to beat Jeff Culpepper held on to win the feature. Herbie Donath come home second with Ricky Culpepper third, Scott Prins fourth, and Chris Storey rounding out the top five.
Kody Smith and Dylan Holmes were back in action for the Road Warrior class and ready to put on a show. For ten laps the two drivers swapped the lead and even traded a little paint. A few times Holmes spun out caused by some not so gentle contact from Smith. Ultimately in the end Smith was able to hold off Holmes and pick up the win.
Be sure to come out this Saturday for a full racing program and some of the greatest racing action on earth. We hope to see you here!
