Santa Maria Speedway
SANTA MARIA, Calif. (June 19) - The Super Late Models made their way to Santa Maria for their second local points race of the season. At the start of the 30-lap main event it was Steve Drake of San Luis Obispo who jumped out front to take the early lead. Drake had some considerable pressure from Lompoc's Mike Johnson who trailed closely in second place. On the last lap Johnson got next to Drake, but couldn't get by the quick #11 Late Model. Drake took the win with Johnson finishing second and Clay Daly of Watsonville finishing third.

In the Papich Construction IMCA Modifieds 25-lap main event Kenny Kirkpatrick of Santa Maria held onto the early lead. Two late cautions allowed point leader Doug Thornton of Santa Maria to close the gap with Kirkpatrick. But on the last lap third place car Josh Vogt of Santa Maria passed Thornton for second and that cleared the way for a Kirkpatrick victory. Vogt took second and Thornton finished third. Thornton's third place finish still gives him a 15 point lead over Shawn Calderwood in the 2010 championship.

The Toste Grading and Paving Mini-Stocks 20-lap main event had several drivers fighting to get to the lead. But it was Korban Ensign of Nipomo who took his 4-cylinder stocker to the front. A yellow flag with two laps to go closed the field for a two lap sprint to the finish. At the restart Ensign had some pressure from Robbie Cervantes of Arroyo Grande, but it was Korban Ensign who kept it out front for the win. Cervantes finished second with Rob Gilbertson of Santa Maria taking third.

The California Lightning Sprints made their first appearance of the season at SMS. In the 20-lap main event it was Jarrett Kramer of Spring Valley who led the way to victory. Kramer held off rival Corey Ballard of Orange who finished second with Dan Hillberg of Placentia taking third place.

Next weekend marks the return of the USAC West Coast 360 Sprint cars along with the Papich Construction IMCA Modifieds, Toste Grading & Paving Mini-Stocks and always exciting MMI Hobby Stocks. Check the Speedway website at www.RaceSantaMariaSpeedway.com for ticket prices and times.
