Matt Felten CUMBERLAND, Md. (October 17) - Kyle Lear picked up the lead with eight laps to go to secure the Western Maryland Nationals title in a victory with the Steel Block Bandits tour on Sunday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
Lear, of Severna Park, won $5,000 in the race ahead of Dylan Yoder.
The Rock closed its 2010 season with five other winners. Brian Duffy (Street Stock), Kevin Palmer (Classics), Tom Warren (Hobby Stocks), Neil Bauer Jr. (4-Cylinder) and Gary Proctor (6/8-Cylinder) shared victory lane honors.
In the 50-lap Bandits feature, Lear worked himself into second with 12 laps to go to get behind leader D.J. Troutman. When Troutman's engine began to sound ill, Lear closed in and grabbed the lead on lap 42. Lear beat Yoder to the finish by seven car lengths at the conclusion. Walker Arthur was third.
Lear started fourth and fell into fifth early until making up one spot after the second caution on lap nine. He was running in third headed into the mandatory fuel stop at lap 25.
Yoder was one of two drivers to move through the field throughout the race. After a multi-car crash at lap three, Yoder restarted eighth and cracked the top five before lap 20. He grabbed third from Arthur with 10 to go and took second over Troutman.
Troutman had led the entire race after starting on the pole but headed to the pit area shortly after losing the lead to Lear and ended up 15th.
After Arthur in third, Kyle Merkel came from 18th to finish fourth and Bo Feathers wrapped up fifth by picking up four spots in the last four laps.
The race had 41 entries. Jack Pencil set the fastest time and Troutman won the dash to earn the pole on Saturday night.
Duffy ran away with the Street Stock feature win after starting on the pole. He finished half of a track ahead of Chris Chamberlain, John Whitfield, Jim Sayler and Jamie Swank.
Duffy got the lead from Whitfield on lap two and drove away. Whitfield and Sayler battled for second for much of the race before giving way to Chamberlain in the final laps.
The race was marred by a six-car crash that knocked out five of the cars involved as the first lap was completed.
