Matt Felten CUMBERLAND, Md. (August 28) - D.J. Troutman took the checkered in the George Hilliard Memorial and Mike Altobelli Jr. won the final Bedford-Rock Shootout in the main events on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
Mike Desch and Chris Chamberlain won the Street Stock races. Justin Michael was the Hobby Stock winner and James Best and Jamie Mills won the 4-Cylinder and 6/8-Cylinder features.
Altobelli won the first 20-lap Limited Late Model that was rained out on July 31. He jumped out front early in the race over Barry Miller. Seventh-starting Matt Sponaugle moved up to third in the first two laps.
Altobelli led by 10 car lengths when Sponaugle passed Miller for second. Two laps later, Sponaugle closed in and claimed the lead just before Miller slowed with a flat tire to bring out the caution.
Sponaugle's turn out front lasted only until lap 10 when he suffered a flat and was forced to the pits. Altobelli reclaimed the lead and went on to win by over three seconds over Travis Beaver. Matt Emerick ended up third.
Troutman was fourth and Matt Cosner was fifth. Sponaugle came back to finish sixth, good enough to claim first in the Shootout points for the six races this season held in conjunction with Bedford Speedway.
Troutman took off from the outside pole over Miller and Sponaugle in the George Hilliard Memorial. Sponaugle raced his way to second but Troutman raced his way to a lead of nearly three seconds early on.
A wave of cautions kept the field together through the finish. The first pair came at lap nine, and the sixth came on the final lap. Troutman still held on by sixth car lengths over Sponaugle. Emerick was third again, followed by Miller and Travis Stickley in the top five.
Desch got his sixth win of the season earlier in the evening in first Street Stock feature. Desch took the lead from John Whitfield on lap three and was out front until Chamberlain caught up and went by on lap 10.
Three laps later, Desch made the winning move in turn three to retake the lead. He finished ahead of Chamberlain by three car lengths. Daryl Whetstone, Justin Bonnett and Rick Wright completed the top five.
Chamberlain came back to win the nightcap feature for the Street Stocks after holding off Jamey Swank in the closing laps. Chamberlain led the entire distance after starting on the pole.
Swank moved up to second by lap three with Daryl Whetstone and Mike Desch running third and fourth. The top four remained close after a pair of cautions on lap six.
Chamberlain held off Swank in the final lap by a car length at the finish. Whetstone, Desch and Wright completed the top five.
Justin Michael won for the first time in the 15-lap Hobby Stock feature, barely beating Jimmy Moreland to the finish line. Michael led by as many as eight car lengths but Moreland caught up after taking second on lap 12 to set the stage for the closest finish of the night.
In the final turns, Moreland first looked to the high side in turn three and then drove to the bottom out of turn four to get a fender alongside Michael at the finish line.
Mike VanMeter finished third over Marcius VanMeter and Bill VanMeter.
Best got his first win of the season over Jason Thompson in the 12-lap 4-Cylinder feature. Brandon Inglish, Shane Molovich and DacRon Powell rounded out the top five.
Thompson led the first three laps before giving way to Best on a restart. Best pulled away until another caution made the race closer three laps short of the finish.
Mills won the 6/8-Cylinder feature for the third time after grabbing the lead from Ray Shepherd at lap two. Mills got a scare in the last two laps when his car lost power steering. He held off Elwood Hyre by a car length.
Ringer was second until the closing laps when Hyre, who started seventh, got by. Ringer ended up third. Shepherd was fourth and Dustin Proctor completed the top five.
