Matt Felton CUMBERLAND, Md. (August 14) - Mike Altobelli Jr. made his first trip to The Rock pay off with a victory in the Limited Late Model Bedford/Rock Shootout on Saturday night.
Joining Altobelli with victories were Street Stock winner Mike Desch and 4-Cylinder winner Mike Lewis. David Riley and Marcius VanMeter split a pair of Hobby Stock features. Bill Brown Sr. and Kurt Welsh won the Classic Racing Series features.
Altobelli, who started on the pole of the 20-lap feature, took off at the start and led Matt Sponaugle by a dozen car lengths after the first handful of laps. Sponaugle reeled him back in by the halfway point. Matt Cosner, Daniel Cornman and Darrell Dick were running in the top five behind the leaders.
The race's only caution on lap 14 led to a restart with the field bunched back up. Altobelli was able to get far enough ahead to take the checkered flag by six car lengths over Sponaugle. Cosner, Dick and Travis Calhoun completed the top five.
After starting on the pole, Desch won for the fifth time in the 16-lap Street Stock feature over John Whitfield and Chris Chamberlain. Desch held on over four cautions. Behind him, Whitfield, Chamberlain, Bob Jay and Bryan Kerns mixed it up in the top five.
Whitfield got second after halfway ahead of Chamberlain but trailed Desch at the finish by a handful of car lengths. Kerns and Daryl Whetstone completed the top five.
Lewis broke through for his first win this season by getting around Kevin Beers Jr. with two laps to go. Beers held on for second with a tire going down while Neil Bauer Jr., Steve Riggleman and Jon Gephart rounded out the top five.
Lewis began the race in sixth and picked up second when Jason Thompson thumped the outside wall trying to chase Beers for the lead. Two laps following the restart, Lewis closed in and beat Beers to the finish line with a couple of car lengths to spare.
Riley won the 15-lap, make-up feature over Jimmy Moreland, Marcius VanMeter, Mike VanMeter and Jarrod Brown. The win was the second for Riley this season.
Riley started second and led Moreland and Marcius VanMeter throughout the event to win by four car lengths.
Marcius VanMeter took the nightcap Hobby Stock feature from the pole position over Terry Norris, Chad Gambol, Justin Michael and Mike VanMeter.
Marcius had a comfortable lead early, and then held on over a couple of restarts to win by six car lengths.
Brown won the 20-lap, make-up feature for the Classic Cars earlier in the night in a close battle with Jim Crocker to the finish line. Early leader Kurt Welsh was fighting to hold off Crocker and Brown when he spun in turn four on lap seven.
That left Brown to get the lead from Crocker and hold on the rest of the way to the finish by two car lengths. Matt Wallace was third while Welsh fought back to fourth and Pete Neal was fifth.
The second Classic Car feature ended with redemption for Welsh after he snuck by the leaders on the white flag lap for the victory. Crocker and Brown resumed their battle from the first race and seemed to have the race to themselves until a caution with five laps to go.
Crocker had led every lap until Brown got by with three laps to go. Crocker fought back to the inside and as the two raced into turn three, they slid high and left the bottom open for Welsh. Welsh drove through the opening and on to victory over Crocker, Joe Snodgrass, Brown and Wallace.
