HAGERSTOWN, Md. (July 10) - Despite a brace on his wrist from an incident that sidelined him the previous week, Marvin Winters prevailed in the Ernie D's 25 Special Saturday night at Hagerstown Speedway with a .613 second margin on Scott LeBarron. The win, his second of the season and career 25th, was worth $2,500 plus an additional $575 in lap money.

Kyle Lear of Severna Park, Md. was back for a second consecutive week in the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman feature with a 1.419 second win over Bruce Kane after having won at Potomac on Friday night. Hagerstown's Brian Miller led all the way to win by only .269 second over Mike Warrenfeltz in the Ernie D's pure stock feature which made it a clean sweep for A & C Racing Engines.

Winters, of McConnellsburg, Pa had LeBarron to contend with him the entire distance with LeBarron making numerous attempts until he led laps 18 and 19 before Winters regained the front position for the final circuits.

"Starting up front sure does help a lot," Winters said. "The track was smooth up top where I could run. I didn't want to run through the rest as my hand was thumping pretty good. Scott ran a good race. I saw him and thought I was in deep trouble but luckily I ran into the lapped cars and sort of used them to get back around him."

LeBarron started from the pole as Winters overpowered him on the start to pull ahead from the second turn while Jamie Lathroum took third as Ronnie DeHaven Jr. grabbed fourth from D. J. Myers on lap two.

The field closed when Jeremy Miller slowed on the third lap and on the fourth, Jim Yoder got into J. T. Spence to break the outside nose piece and wedge under his tire, sending him up the track into defending race winner, Jason Covert.

From there, the race remained under green as Winters held LeBarron to one to four lengths at most with Lathroum trailing by a half straightaway. LeBarron used each lap to try different lines to duck inside and pull ahead to lead the 18th and then 19th circuit before Winters saw rear traffic as the opportunity to edge slightly ahead on the 20th round and hold onto the lead by .613 seconds at the checkered.

"We've been running good, the motor broke twice and got in a crash last week, but it's been fast. We just need to keep it all in one piece," Winters said.

Lathroum and DeHaven Jr. were next followed by Dylan Yoder from eighth. Myers was sixth with 16th starting Gary Stuhler, Frankie Plessinger, Dan Stone (19th) and Andy Fries from 21st completing the top ten. J.T. Spence, LeBarron and DeHaven Jr. won the heats while Stone was the consy winner.

Several late model sportsman cars got together in turn two of the opening lap with Pete Weaver the only car that ended up stopping completely but all were able to restart. Michael Collins and Glenn Elliott held the top two spots until both had issues to sideline them on the second lap as Richard Walls inherited the lead.

Walls led the next two circuits before 12th starting Lear drove by with Bruce Kane taking over the runner up spot on lap six.

Lear pulled five seconds ahead and just into the rear of the field on lap 18 when the caution was displayed but on the restart, easily pulled away from Kane to post his second win by 1.419 seconds.

"That pile up on the first lap, that's the problem starting in mid pack." Lear said. "It makes a heck of a race car driver out of you when you race up here. It has a little bit of damage on the new body, but we can handle a new body with two wins."

Terry Flaherty was next with Ashley Barrett coming from 18th to end fourth and get the St. Thomas Towing/Checkered Flag Lube Hard Charger. Steve Axtell Jr. advanced six spots to fifth while Scott Palmer (13th), Mike Walls (15th), Wayne Walls Jr. (20th), Donnie Farlling (17th) and Justin Weaver (16th) completed the top ten. Lear, Courtney Shreiner and Axtell Jr. won the heats.

Miller pulled to the pure stock lead over Danny Beavers while six time winner, Mike Warrenfeltz was slowly picking his way to the front and was third by a lap 13 caution. Miller sped away the final two laps while Warrenfeltz got past Beavers and reeled Miller in but had to settle for the runner up spot a length back.

"It's tough, no matter what class you're in, it's tough to win," said Miller, a former four time four cylinder champion."We earned it. I'm sure Mike had plenty for us tonight. I'd like to start behind him and win."

Beavers, Steve Lowery and Bill Reitober were next. Beavers and Warrenfeltz won the heats. Warrenfeltz was again the Turner Bowling Centers Hard Charger.

Next Saturday 's race program (July 17) will be Manitowoc Company Family Night and featuring the late models along with the postponed Bill Bowman Special 31-lap event for the Hoosier Tire-Mid Atlantic late model sportsman along with the Ernie D's pure stocks and a postponed Enduro Dash.
