Todd Fisher NEWBERRYTOWN, Penn. (June 26) - On a very fast and wide racing surface that provided multiple grooves of racing, Chris Knopp of Fawn Grove won his second straight Late Model feature and third of the season at the Susquehanna Speedway Park on Saturday night. Sophomore Street Stock driver, Brett Pickel of Bainbridge finally picked up his first career victory after weeks of mechanical failures and bad luck. Lancaster's Donnie Broderick returned to his winning ways by winning his eighth Xtreme Stock Car feature of the season. Etter's Andrew Frye won the 15-lap XSC Elite feature for his fourth of the season. Daryl Sipe of York Haven claimed his fourth straight Mini Van victory. Jim Crocker was awarded the Classic Car victory when Bill Brown Sr. was disqualified in post-race technical inspection.
At the start of the 20-lap Late Model feature, polesitter Tommy Slanker grabbed the early lead. A wild scramble for second saw Bob Minnich, Randy Kissinger and Kyle Saylor vying for position. Meanwhile Chris Knopp methodically passed each driver and finally found himself tracking down Slanker. On lap eight, Knopp used the high side cushion to drive by Slanker to take over the top spot. From there Knopp set sail and continued to the finish to claim his third win of the season. A wild battle for second place in the waning laps of the race found Charles Potts coming home in second, followed by Slanker and Larry Baer. Justin Ehrhart was involved in a lap 4 incident with Jake Jones. Ehrhart came from the back of the field to finish fifth using the high side cushion as well. At one time, in the late stages, Ehrhart made it all the way up to the runner-up spot.
In victory lane, an ecstatic Knopp commented, "I felt like I was back in a Sprint Car with the way my car drove around the track on the cushion. It was great tonight!" Following an extensive post-race engine inspection, Knopp's car was found in compliance with the rules and officially declared the winner.
Marshall McCullen Jr. and Brett Pickel brought the Street Stock division to the start of their 20-lap feature event. McMullen grabbed the early lead and set the pace looking to pick up his first victory of the season. However bad luck finally passed by Brett Pickel in second place and struck the leader McMullen as he retired from the race on lap 14. Pickel inherited the top spot and never looked back. The former Elizabethtown High School football star traded his football lid for a racing helmet last year, finally claimed a popular career first victory, followed by 2009 Street Stock champion Scott Thunberg. Brian Hauenstein finished third, followed by Randy Zechman and Jim Palm Jr.
