DONNELLSON, Iowa (August 29) - The regular racing season came to a close, Friday, at Lee County Speedway as the Shottenkirk Parts Express Season Championship races decided the 2010 points champions for the track.

As it turned out there were no changes at the top of the points standings in any class, as Tanner Thomann, Jason Cook, Mark Burgtorf, Matt Greiner, Rich Smith and Bill Michel all entered the night with a point lead and finished as the track champion.

Burgtorf solidified his second consecutive IMCA Late Model track championship with a wire to wire win. The green to checkered race saw little passing up front, as Denny Woodworth, who started third, finished second. Jeff Aikey, who started second, finished third.

Smith entered the night not even needing to show up to be crowned the 2010 Miller Lite IMCA Modified champion, and as it turns out that was a good thing. He left after two laps when the power steering pump went away, leaving the race to the rest of the field. Michael Long started deep in the field, but came to the front to get another feature win. Brandon Rothzen led for several laps during the middle of the race, but had to settle for second, while Jeff Waterman ran in the third spot.

In the IMCA Sport Mods, Cook entered the night with a one point advantage and did exactly what he needed to do to ice the season championship; he picked up the regular season finale win. Rick Barlow, Jr., ran a good race finishing in the second spot, followed by Phillip Cossel in third. Joe Bliven, who ran second for much of the race, settled for fourth.

Entering the night, the talk in the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock class was the close point battle between Tanner Thomann, Jeremy Pundt (three points back) and Jake Wenig (four points back), but at the end of the night it was more about the race's finish. After an early caution Pundt spent much of the race trying to find his way back to the front, while Wenig and Thomann spent that same portion of the race running first and second respectively. Insert eventual race winner Matt Tucker here. Tucker, who missed several races throughout the season, started ninth and found his way to the front. He got around Thomann and then set his sights on Wenig. As the pair took the white flag they came together at the flagstand with Tucker getting into the outside wall. Tucker then tracked Wenig back down and the two made contact on the backstretch. There was contact again in turns three and four, with Tucker eventually coming out of turn four with a slight lead over Thomann, and Wenig spinning. Pundt was collected as well, as the race finished. Thomann would finish second, while Rob Wilsey was third.

Michel needed to stay four spots or less behind Gabe Harrison in order to get the season championship, at one point he was too far behind during the middle stages of the race, with Harrison leading. On a restart, however, Harrison missed a shift and a trio of cars got by him. He was not able to get back to the front and Michel was able to hang close enough to pick up the championship. Michael Grossman got the final points win of the season, followed by Jerry Ostby and Harrison.

Greiner had the track championship wrapped up, essentially, before the Stock Car race even started, but Jeff Mueller made sure quickly, that he left his name on the final night of 2010's points season. Mueller had some major problems at Lee County Speedway during the season, with engine and mechanical issues, but he made it quickly known with a great start, that he will be back next year. He ran away at the drop of the green and was never threatened. Greiner would settle for second on championship night, while Jason Cook finished in third.

While the regular season is over, racing has not been completed at Lee County Speedway, as it picks up this Saturday night, Sept. 4, with the Deery Brothers IMCA Late Model Summer Nationals event that will be the conclusion to the Trump Trucks/Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Model Drive for Five. Also in action will be Stock Cars, Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks and Wild Things.
