Mike McGuire DAVENPORT, Iowa (August 27) - Way too soon, Friday was Kile Motorsports Season Championship night at the Davenport Speedway. Track champions were crowned in all five weekly divisions, under perfect weather conditions for a change.
The Petersen Plumbing and Heating - IMCA Late Model feature had all the drama and plot twists of a Hollywood movie. Ray Guss Jr., came into the night leading both the track points and the IMCA Late Model national points, with a slim lead over Terry Neal. Guss started on the pole position and quickly built a sizeable lead.
The caution flag started flying on lap seven and would wave three more times by lap 12. It was during this period that Guss developed mechanical problems and dropped back in the field. Meanwhile, Neal was rifling through the pack and took the lead on lap twelve.
Neal would go untouched the remainder of the 25 laps for the win and the much needed points towards his national title hopes. He also became the eighth different late model winner in nine races at Davenport, this season.
Defending IMCA national champion, Kevin Blum, battled to a second place finish in a barrowed car, with Doug Nigh finishing third and Matt Ryan fourth. Brian Harris rounded out the top five.
Guss stayed on the racetrack and nursed his ride to a fourteenth place finish, enough to give him the track championship at the Davenport Speedway and the precious bonus points towards the national crown. The Goacher Towing - Pro Mod division entered the night with Doug Crampton holding a four point lead over John Bull. When the final Pro Mod checkered flag had flown, Doug Crampton held a four point lead over John Bull and the track championship.
The two drivers started side by side in the front row with Bull leading lap one, before Crampton took over on lap two. Crampton would get out to a decent lead, and then Bull started to reel him in. On lap 14, Bull would retake the lead and drive to his second win on the season. Bob Dominacki took a second place finish, with Crampton third. Thad Wilson was fourth and Tim Arp fifth.
Matt Werner topped off his Koehler Electric Street Stock track championship with a flag to flag feature win. Four different drivers were in the mix for second, before Jeremy Marquette pulled away late in the race. Scott Griffin took third with Bruce Fosdyck Jr., fourth, and Bryan Ritter fifth.
Jerry Pratt took the Engineered Maintenance Service IMCA Modified track championship despite finishing ninth in the feature. Pratt led lap one of the main, before suffering two flat tires during the race. Mike Fluegel grabbed the lead on lap two and would race to his second win on the season, in a race that would end under caution. Andrew Burk would finish second, followed by Tony VonDresky, Greg Wilson, and Keith Haislip.
Kevin Haury claimed the 4 Stock track title by finishing third in the caution-free, 10-lap feature. Haury came into the night with a seven point lead over Luke Thurness and ten points over Mike Morrow. Thurness and Morrow both won their heat races, putting the pressure on Haury. In the feature, Morrow quickly got out front and would take his fourth feature win of the season with Thurness close behind. Haury managed to keep the leaders within eyesight and earned enough points to win the track championship.
The next event at the Davenport Speedway will be the 7th Annual Spooktacular, held Saturday, September 26th. The event is highlighted by 50-lap, $1,000-to-win features for both street stocks and 4 stocks.
