Kathy Tienor MANITOWOC, Wisc. (August 14) - After another hot and humid week, drivers and fans alike were ready for some racing as the Inaugural George Scheffler Memorial Race was on the bill, along with Defaut Auto Salvage Night and Back to School Night for the kids. Trophy sponsor for the evening was Affordable Auto Rental. With inclement weather being held at bay, the racers were eager to get on with the show.
The EWSC Monster Energy Late Models were honoring the memory of a fallen competitor, with the First Annual George Scheffler Memorial Race, a 39 Lap A Main. Leading the field onto the track were the the front row of Rick Scheffler (Waukesha) and Craig Schueffner (Sheboygan Falls), followed by Bret Sievert (New Berlin) and Tom Naeyaert (Shawano), and Al Atkinson (Milwaukee) and Jayme Zidar. Rick jumped out to the lead at the drop of green, with Schueffner and Naeyaert hot on his tail. Early movers in the pack were Jamie Mchugh (New Zealand) and Gordie Seegert Jr. (Oostburg). The action was furious all over the track as drivers searched for a line that would make their car work. A spin by Frank Geiger (Whitelaw) on Lap 20 brought the field back together. Rick Scheffler the leader, followed by Naeyaert, Schueffner, Sievert, Russ Scheffler (Waukesha), McHugh, and Tim Buhler (Glenbuelah). Two, 3 and even 4 wide at times as they fought for position, yellow few again for a nasty incident involving Bob Cullen (Chilton) and Zidar, resulting in twin disqualifications and 1 week suspensions. The restart was Rick, Naeyaert, Schueffner, Buhler, McHugh, Russ, and Randy Markwardt (Sheboygan). The last seven laps was a dash for the cash, with Rick securing the victory, and Naeyaert, Schueffner, McHugh, Buhler, Seegert Jr., Russ, Markwardt, Brad Mueller (Random Lake) and Sievert. Hard Chargers for the event included Jamie McHugh and Gordie Seegert Jr. both passing 7 cars, Markwardt passing 6 and Buhler passing 4.
Transfer cars out of the Monster Energy Late Model B Main were Seegert Jr., Markwardt, Stroika, Cullen, Jim Schmidt (Cleveland, did not start A Main due to oil leak), Dan Dippel (Plymouth) and Jesse Cullen (Chilton).
