Kathy Tienor MANITOWOC, Wisc. (July 9) - With Mueller Sales & Service sponsoring Scout Night at the races and Hales Corners Reunion Night, Friday evening brought beautiful weather and large car counts for the packed grandstands. With additional funds added to all finishing positions in the Monster Energy Drink Late Model A Main provided by Central Services Co. and Behling Racing Equipment, the Late Models were the spotlight of the program on this night.
The Monster Energy Late Models 30 Lap A Main lead of on the night honoring the track where most of them began their careers. They were led to the green by Bret Sievert (New Berlin) and Tom Naeyaert (Shawano), with Dan Sorce () and Rick Scheffler (Waukesha) right behind them. The pack thundered to green with drivers headed to both the low and high lines, and Naeyaert jumping out to an early lead running the high side and Scheffler right in his tracks. After an early caution on Lap 6 for a spin by Billy Rezutek (Big Bend), the field was quickly realigned with Naeyaert, Sievert, Scheffler, Craig Schueffner (Sheboygan Falls), Russ Scheffler (Waukesha), and Sorce at the head of the field. At the drop of the green, cars were 3-wide making moves in the middle of the pack trying to come forward. At the front Naeyaet held the high line and Rick Scheffler the low side, as they battled door to door for several circuits, with Rick finally wrestling the lead away on Lap 12. On the next lap the yellow again waved as Matt Schultz stalled on the front stretch. On the restart it was Rick, Naeyaert, Sievert, Schueffner, Russ, Sorce, and Tim Buhler (Glenbeulah) bringing the field to the green. Some hard, clean racing took place as the rest of the race was caution free with Rick holding off Naeyaert, followed by Russ, Sievert, Schueffner, Randy Markwardt (Sheboygan), Buhler, Pete Parker(Kaukauna), Sorce and Ron Stroika (Mukwonago). The big movers of the race were Russ Scheffler and Markwardt who both passed 6 cars, Bob Cullen (Chilton) passed 5.
The Late Model B Main was run caution free, and won by Chris Carlson (North Cape). Joining him in moving to the A Main were Ted Dolhoun Sr. (), Rezutek, Paul Parker (Appleton), Cullen, and Jim Ryctik, who passed 6 cars to get the final transfer spot.
