36th Annual National 100 Preview And Schedule
Late Model Mark Pinson, Alabama (November 11, 2010)
Happy veterans day to all the men and women who have served our country throughout all the years and the nations conflict, I am truly grateful. This latest lap of the Red Clay Report will focus on what is no doubt one of my favorite races of the year, the 36th National 100 at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, Alabama.
I have hit this show the last three years and always leave the race with a smile and quite worn out as it is a day long affair, well worth it no doubt. This long standing crown jewel race in the South will have most all the major players in Dirt Late Model racing, a new date, one week later than normal to avoid all conflicts that have popped up in recent years. This race will run over the course of three days and will feature total car counts approaching 300. Three divisions of Late Models will highlight a very busy schedule. East Alabama Motor Speedway features a very fast high-banked 3/8mi. red clay track that provides usually a very racy surface that tests the bravery of all who tackle the hills. Operated by the Thomas family who this year were inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame, this well-respected racing family takes their speedway and the racing very serious will have everything well in order as the action heats up on Friday. This race, in my view, is a classic must-see for the serious Late Model fan. Fans travel from all over to attend this race, and it's worth every mile.
The speedway is a classic old-style venue with lot's of charm and ambience, an electric atmosphere prevails at this no-frill Southern speedway, whenever the Thomas family cracks the gates, great views from any seat in the house, a good thing as the action will be a ripper no doubt. Great payouts in all classes will bring out all the major players, 20,000 for the Super Late Models to show, oh yea, a new twist this year, the track will pay $50.00 for each lap the leader is up front. What makes this event fun besides all the great fans that show is the afternoon break for track prep. Right after the last main event, the track is re-worked to perfection, about an 2 hour break at most, then the big 100 lapper takes the green right at dusk.
You say why a track prep break? The track gets hard during the day, looks like a pavement track, come feature time it's a brand new surface, dust free, racy and fast as heck. I like the break as all the cronies get together out in the parking lot and we grill, bench race and have a blast. Want to see the best Late Model drivers in the country? The National 100 is the place to be this weekend at historic East Alabama Motor Speedway.
