Matt Felten CUMBERLAND, Md. (June 13) - Doug Timmons came on strong in the latter half of the Dana Dove Memorial for the Steel Block Bandits Series to get the win on Sunday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
Timmons laid claim to the lead in the 30-lap feature two laps past the halfway point and drove away from runner-up Matt Sponaugle to win by 4.2 seconds. Timmons was the sixth different driver in six races to win in the Limited Late Model division, including an earlier race for the Bandits series.
The Street Stock Invitational went to Brian Duffy and Ian Will led the final two laps to capture the 4-Cylinder win.
Timmons, who started fifth, picked up just one spot in the first 10 laps then came to the front in the next seven laps to grab the lead after a two-lap, side-by-side race with Chris Harr.
Timmons picked up third from D.J. Troutman before a caution on lap 12. One lap later he got by Sponaugle for second and made the winning move over Harr on the low side on lap 17.
The race had seven cautions including three in the final six laps, one of which knocked Harr from the race after a collision on a restart. Timmons pulled away from Sponaugle over the last five laps.
Kyle Merkel secured third on the final restart with five laps to go and was the biggest gainer of the race after starting 15th. Joey Leavell finished fourth and Walker Arthur was fifth after starting 14th.
Troutman lost two spots late in the race to finish sixth. Jonathan DeHaven and Lewis Hudson finished seventh and eighth. Andy Fries, who ran as high as fourth, and Matt Cosner, who started 18th, completed the top 10.
Duffy started on the pole and led all 16 laps of the Street Stock feature. John Whitfield was second followed by Daryl Whetstone, Travis Brown and Kerry Molovich.
Whitfield picked up second from Brown three laps into the race but struggled to stay on Duffy's pace late and trailed him at the finish line by nearly 4 seconds.
Whetstone got third from Brown after the only caution of the race at lap five.
Will came from the ninth spot on the grid to win the 12-lap feature for the 4-Cylinders. On lap nine, Will chased Andrew Pluta on the inside only to watch Pluta retake the lead on the outside in turn two. Following a caution later in the same lap, Will went to the high side and completed the pass on Pluta to get the lead on lap 10.
Several lead contenders fell out of the race or fell back by the finish. Mike Lewis was running second when he spun and collected the third-place car of Kevin Beers on lap seven. Andrew Pluta was forced to the pits with one lap to go with a flat tire and finished ninth.
Robert Pluta was second and Jeremy Miller was third at the finish. Dave Lambert and DacRon Powell completed the top five.
