Michael Despain JUNCTION CITY, Ky. (May 28) - Exciting racing action kicked off the 2010 Memorial Day Holiday Weekend at Ponderosa Speedway and Justin Rattliff of Campbellsville, KY would score his second win of the season at "Kentucky's Baddest Bullring" by claiming the Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Model feature event. Todd Coffman of Junction City, KY picked up his third Bob Allen Motor Mall Pro Late Model feature win of the season and Jason Wheatley of Loretto, KY won his first Clayton Homes UMP Modified feature race of 2010.
The Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Model main event would get off to a rocky start as the field attempted to complete the first lap when Tim Tungate would get turned around in turn three and Bobby Wolter, Jr. would roll his mount to a halt as well, with both drivers able to continue. Racing would get underway and Justin Rattliff would grab the race lead, followed by Dustin Neat, David Webb, D.J. Wells, and Jeff Watson. Watson would take fourth from Wells on lap 2 as Rattliff and Neat would begin to battle for the race lead. By lap 6, Rattliff and Neat would put a little distance between themselves and third place running Webb, as Dustin Linville would challenge Wells for fifth. By lap 10, Rattliff and Neat began working slower traffic, with the pair coming together on the frontchute and Rattliff slipping a little in turn two, allowing Neat to fire a slider for the lead in turn four on lap 11. Caution would fly again on lap 16 when Arnie Fields got crossed up in turn two as race leader Neat was set to lap him, with Neat making contact with the spinning Fields, damaging the left front corner of Neat's mount. The restart would see Rattliff fire under Neat for the lead and Rattliff would regain the top spot off of turn four. Webb would close in on Neat for second and grab the runner-up slot on lap 19 as the final caution of the race flew on lap 21 when Dustin Linville spun exiting turn four and would be pushed pitside for the night. The final few circuits would see Webb attempt to challenge Rattliff for the lead, but Rattliff would race to the checkered flag first in his JRR Auto Sales/ MGL Auto Sales/On-Time Courier/Grant Lee Farms/Cox Wrecker Service/Budda Bert Transmission Sales and Service/Peterson Fluid Systems sponsored #16 Bloomquist Race Car. Webb, Neat, Watson, and Wells would complete the top five, while Wolter, Jr., Fields, Michael Chilton, Daniel Hatcher, and Wesley Brummett would round out the top ten. Rattliff would be the top qualifier among 14 entries at 13.803 seconds and would also win the dash, while Tungate won the heat.
The Bob Allen Motor Mall Pro Late Model feature would go caution free and feature some three-wide action throughout the field, but the man to beat would again be Todd Coffman as Coffman led all 20 laps on the main event and held off a hard-charging Jeremy Hines to score the victory in the seat of his King Clean/Coffman Photography/ Cook's Collectibles/Two Brothers Café/A Breath of Fresh Air/Harrod Farms/Bottom Line Tax and Bookkeeping/Hurst Racing/Central Kentucky Log Cabins sponsored #35 C.J. Rayburn Race Car, GM604 powered machine. Hines would settle for runner-up honors, while Chase McWhorter would finish a close third, with Jeff Johnson and Zane Powell rounding out the top five. McWhorter would be the top qualifier among 13 entries at 14.038 seconds, while Coffman also won the dash and Mulligan won the heat.
The 20 lap Clayton Homes UMP Modified feature race would also be caution free as Jason Wheatley would be challenged early on by Bryan Barber, with Barber making one last run on the final lap at Wheatley for the win, but Wheatley would nip Barber by a car length to take the victory in the Kaylee and Tommy Wheatley owned St. Joe Garage/ VFM Manufacturing/Mark Martin Chevrolet/Wheatley Tile Flooring/Wheatley Seamless Gutters/Wheatley Auto Sales/Gootee and Mattingly Heating and Cooling/Cozy Corner/ Brady Excavating/Central Kentucky Electrical and Plumbing/Brian Wheatley Landscaping/Springfield Auto and Farm/Nukem Graphics/Rosewood Golf Course sponsored #7 Larry Shaw Race Car by Landers, Mullins Race Engines powered mount. Barber would be top qualifier among 11 entries at 14.979 seconds and also win the dash, while Despain won the heat. SUMMARY-Ponderosa Speedway-Junction City, KY-May 28, 2010
