Greg Parent NEW RICHMOND, Wisc. (May 22) - As early afternoon rain showers gave way to clearing skies, a nice spring evening for racing set in at the Cedar Lake Speedway for their sixth event of the season. All four weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions returned to action on Saturday night May 22. In a thrilling finish to the NASCAR Midwest Modified main event, Mark Thomas raced to his first-ever CLS feature victory. Cory Davis put together a strong run to earn his second feature win of the season in the NASCAR Pro Stock division. Ron Schreiner dominated the NASCAR Modified main for his second win of the season. In the final race of the evening, Chad Mahder made it two straight in the NASCAR Late Model division as he overtook leader Adam Hensel following a restart with ten laps to go.
The rumble of 25 NASCAR Late Models filled the damp evening air, as they prepared for 30 laps of thundering racing action. Just like a couple of the other feature races, the late models had several cars get bunched up on the opening lap resulting in a complete restart. Mike Bear, Jim Rychtik and Jeff Keeney were unable to continue. On the second start attempt, pole sitter Steve Laursen drove to the early lead over Adam Hensel. During a long 20 lap green flag run, Hensel moved to the front on lap three while Chad Mahder had raced his way forward from sixth to garner second on lap seven. Mahder began to close in on the leader over the next several laps followed by Laursen, Ashley Anderson and Paul Parker. Pat Doar was on the move forward from his 10th starting spot. Doar cracked the top five on lap eight.
With Hensel approaching traffic near the halfway mark, Mahder continued to narrow the margin. Doar also continued his march forward, as he got by Anderson in traffic on lap 13 and blew past Laursen for third two laps later. Doar quickly closed in on the lead duo. Mahder had now caught Hensel and was right behind him. Doar proceeded to close the margin very quickly, and on lap 19 he was only several car lengths behind Mahder. As the lead trio began lap 21, Doar pulled alongside Mahder and was moving past when the yellow light blinked on for Toby Patchen. Patchen lost a tire and coasted to a stop in turn two. Scoring reverted back to lap 20 with Hensel, Mahder, Doar, Laursen and Rick Egersdorf in the top five. When the green replaced the yellow, Mahder immediately drove to the outside lane where Doar had been, and he moved around Hensel in turn two to grab the lead. Chad Mahder pulled away by several car lengths over the final ten circuits to record his second consecutive feature win of the season. Adam Hensel held off Pat Doar for second. Steve Laursen and Rick Egersdorf completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten finishers were Ashley Anderson, Mike Nutzmann, John Kaanta, Paul Parker and Brent Larson. Race fans roared their approval as low-budget racer Jeff Keeney scored a heat race win along with Ashley Anderson and Chad Mahder.

The first feature of the evening saw 21 NASCAR Pro Stocks line up for their scheduled 20 lap main event. Frank Fabio and Mike Loomis brought the field to the green, but the race was barely underway when a crash in turn four claimed four cars. A complete restart for the 17 remaining cars saw Loomis grab the early lead over Fabio. With just one lap in, Fabio got into Tim Borgeson while battling for second, causing Borgeson's car to spin sideways in turn four. Ryan Wiome and Justin Stahl got collected. All cars continued with Fabio tagging the tail of the field. Loomis continued to hold the point when the race returned to green over Borgeson and Cory Davis. Davis moved past Borgeson for second on lap four. Sixth starter Rick Kobs, making his season debut in a new pro stock, raced to third on lap six. Davis slipped past Loomis to take the lead on lap seven. With seven laps completed, Chad Dawson spun in turn four to bring out another yellow.
With Davis in the lead, Loomis and Kobs swapped the second spot over the next several laps. Another spin with twelve laps in bunched the field up with Davis, Loomis, Kobs, Borgeson and Lyle Archambeau in the top five. On the following lap, Brian Lick broke in turn one to bring out the fifth caution of the race. Two more green flag laps were followed by the final caution when Justin Stahl stopped in turn three. With the race at the time limit, a green-white-checkered finish was called for by track officials. Cory Davis went on to record his second win of the season over Mike Loomis and Rick Kobs. Lyle Archambeau got by Borgeson with two to go to finish fourth. Rounding out the top ten finishers were Chris Gorka, Justin Dodge, Rich Bishop, Adam Ayotte, and three-time 2010 winner Dan Gullikson. Ryan Wiome and Lyle Archambeau were heat winners.
A full 24 car feature race lined up for 20 laps of thrilling action in the NASCAR Midwest Modified division. Like the pro stocks, the race would not complete one lap before the yellow waved. A crash on the backstretch between David Swearingen and Vince Corbin saw the right front tire of Swearingen get wedged up into the left rear wheel area of Corbin's car. A lengthy delay ensued while the wrecker crews had to take the wheels off of both cars in order to separate them. Several cars got collected in the crash, but all cars were able to continue. Swearingen and Corbin went to the work area and bolted on new tires.
Bob Smith grabbed the early lead on the restart while the battle for second began. Debris in turn four with one lap in forced a restart. Another quick caution waved when Eric Gadach slowed on the backstretch. The green reappeared but only for a couple of laps until Steve Houle stopped with a flat tire. Smith held the lead over Mark Thomas and 2009 track champion Jason Vandekamp. Over the course of the next five laps, Thomas, Vandekamp and Dan Wheeler battled right behind the leader. When Eric Gadach spun with eight laps scored, the race resumed and a great battle for the top four spots also resumed. As the laps rolled by, Thomas began to apply the pressure on Smith for the lead while Vandekamp and Wheeler raced for the third spot. All four cars were very close together. A spin by Robbie Franklin with 15 laps in the books momentarily broke up the great four car battle.
When the race went back green, Thomas pulled alongside Smith on several occasions. As the white flag waved, Thomas got past Smith in turn two. That pass was nullified when Jason Haugerud spun in turn three to set up a two lap dash to the checkers between Smith, Thomas, Wheeler and Vandekamp. The thrilling race up front picked right back up where it had left off with Smith just barely holding on to the lead over Thomas. Once again the white flag flew, and once again Thomas got underneath Smith exiting turn two. As the leaders raced into turn three, Smith bobbled slightly and Wheeler edged past just as Smith and Vandekamp made contact. Smith ended up spinning in turn four, as Thomas raced to his first-ever career CLS feature win in his first appearance of the season with the checkers and yellow waving. The official call went against Vandekamp, so it was a difficult decision on exactly how to handle the final finish. Mark Thomas was the winner with Bob Smith scored in second ahead of Dan Wheeler, Mike Gibson and Bryan Siercks. Completing the top ten were Tony Schill, Alex Gerlach, A J Roschen, Josh Bazey and B main winner Jake Miller. Heat race winners included Wheeler, Vandekamp and Smith.
With 26 NASCAR Modifieds rolling on to the track to do battle for 20 laps around the high-banked 3/8 mile Cedar Lake Speedway, fans were looking to see if the trend of a different winner each night would continue. Rookie modified driver Shawn Phillips blasted into the early lead over Brandon Jensen and veteran racer Ron Schreiner. The first of just two cautions blinked on when Adam Martinson contacted the backstretch wall and several cars bunched up behind him four laps into the race. Schreiner had moved past Jensen for second a couple laps prior, and when the race went green he moved under Phillips for the lead. The final yellow flew for Bob Gierke two laps later, setting the stage for a 14 lap green flag run to the checkers.
Ron Schreiner took command up front while Jensen, Phillips, Kevin Viebrock and Terry Hanson battled for spots behind him with Dave Lear and Jason Miller looking to crack the top five. On lap 13, Lear moved to fifth only to see Miller overtake him the following lap. Miller continued his march forward when he got around Viebrock on lap 16. Two laps later, Miller sped past Phillips for third and closed in on Jensen. As Ron Schreiner became the first repeat winner of the season, Brandon Jensen held off Jason Miller for second. Shawn Phillips and Dave Lear rounded out the top five. Completing the top ten were 11th starter Andy Jones, Kevin Viebrock, Mike Kelley Jr, Terry Hanson and Scott Duvall. Viebrock crossed the line in fifth, but he was docked two positions for a jump on the lap six restart. Heat race wins went to Miller, Hanson and Viebrock.
