Mike McGuire DAVENPORT, Iowa (May 21) - The Davenport Speedway was able to get their second point race of the 2010 season in Friday evening. Rain during the week made for a soft and tacky racetrack, which led to exciting racing action in all six classes.
Late model racer Brian Harris had not competed in weekly racing at the Davenport Speedway in several years, but that did not keep him from finding his way back to victory lane. Harris took the lead of the Petersen Plumbing and Heating IMCA Late Model feature on a lap seven restart, and led the remaining laps, en route to the win.
Kevin Blum, who seemed to be battling someone for position the entire race, finished second. Cory Goldbeck ran a solid race to finish third, followed by Ray Guss Jr. and Mark Preston.
Guss, Matt Ryan, and Bret Diercks all won late model heats.
The scariest moment of the evening came early in the Goacher Towing Service Pro Mod feature. On lap 2 of the 20-lap main, Bob Dominacki ended up on his roof in turn three, bringing out the red flag. Dominacki was able to exit the racecar without serious injury.
When the green flag waved again, Rick Ratliff resumed the lead. Ratliff would hold the top spot until lap 12, when Doug Crampton powered his way to the lead. Crampton would take the win, his second straight of the season. John Bull survived to finish second, with Ratliff third. Tim Arp and Craig Crawford were fourth and fifth respectively.
Matt Werner took the lead of the Koehler Electric Street Stock feature after a lap three restart. Werner led the remainder of the way to take his first points win of the year. Ron Marks Jr. finished second, followed by Jeremy Marquette, Cary Brown, and Rob Nylin. Marquette and Bruce Fosdyck Jr. won the Street Stock heat races.
Jacob Waterman collected his second straight EMS IMCA Modified feature win. Waterman started 7th and chased down race leader Mike Fluegel to take the lead on lap seven. Joe Jones Jr. also passed Fluegel for second , with Mike holding on for third. Terry Rentfro and Dustin Crear completed the top five.
Veteran racer Ron Boyse made his first appearance in an INEX Legend Car subbing for Warren Ropp. Boyse also won his first Legends feature, although not in the conventional way.
Boyse was third at the white flag. The two leaders, Brian Peterson and Mike Mueller made contact in turn one bringing out the caution. Boyse was awarded the win, with Chad Hale second and BJ Bates third.
Mike Morrow shot to the front of the 4 Stock feature and never looked back. Morrow led all ten laps, grabbing his first win of the season at Davenport. Luke Thurness started third, dropped out of the top five briefly, and stormed back to finish second. Last week's winner Kevin Haury was third, followed by Dale Tucker and Chris James.
Bike races for the kids were held after the racing action had concluded.
