George Baumann PLYMOUTH, Wisc. (May 15) - Mid-week rains and many hours of track prep resulted in a heavy and fast track on the Fair Park oval. Bret Sievert (Mukwonago) paced the Late Model A-main every lap while Kurt Davis (West Allis) took the top-spot in the Sprint main.
Grand Nationals were lead by veteran Luke Scholten (Oostburg) and Tim Simon (Fond du Lac) won in the Outlaw Compact feature.
Jim Schmidt (Cleveland) and Sievert raced side by-by-side the first few laps before Sievert pulled ahead. Five caution flags slowed the pace during the first eight laps but then things settled down and fans witnessed some very close racing.
Russ Scheffler (Waukesha) after starting 10th, slowly worked his way ahead, and by lap six was in fourth, two laps later he was behind his brother Ricky in third.
At one point Sievert appear to wobble in turn turn two allowing the pack to close his lead, but in short order he reestablished his six-car length lead. On the 22nd lap Russ moved into second, rounding out the top five were Turk Letizia (Milwaukee) and Schmidt.
The smooth and wide track provided the Sprint cars an opportunity to race in any line they chose and the racing was fast and tight. The lead changed numerous times, sometimes on the same lap.
Jim Melis (Glenbuelah) led the first twelve laps before getting a little high in turn four and T.J. Luedke (Plymouth) slid under for the lead. Paul Pokorski (West Bend) passed Luedke on lap sixteen only to see Luedke come right back to the front on the same lap.
While the front-runners kept running wing-to-wing, Davis was on the move from his sixth row starting spot. By lap fourteen Davis was behind Luedke and they gave the fans a super finish.
Luedke ran low with Davis on the outside, and finally on the last lap, Davis got a strong run off turn two and crossed the line in first. Pokorski was third, Melis fourth and Ben Schmidt (Plymouth) fifth.
The Grand Nationals not to be outdone then showed the crowd another exciting race. Scholten from his front row starting spot quickly took the lead. Steve Schneider (Chilton) came from the second row in behind Scholten.
Chris Baumann (Elkhart Lake) ran third until the end holding off Brett Wenzel (Manitowoc) and John Schultz III (Milwaukee). The race was very close from the front to the back with only one caution slowing pack. Simon won the Outlaw Compact A-main after he took the lead on the eighth lap passing Michael Stream (Sheboygan). A flat tire sent Strean to the pits two laps later and Aaron Stolp (West Allis) took the vacated spot.
Glen Blanke (She Falls) then moved in behind Simon but Stolp came back to finish second. Michael Zitzer (Sheboygan) came from the sixth row to finish third. Justin Green (She Falls) was fourth and Joe Miller (Plymouth) fifth.
Late Model heat races were won by Scott Sohrweide (Chilton), Bill Rezutek (Big Bend) and Russ Scheffler.
Sprint heat winners were Lance Fassbender (Burnett), Davis, Tim Melis (Plymouth) and Doug Wondra (Oakfield). Terry Marten (She Falls) flipped hard in the first heat race but was not injured. The B-main was won by Shane Wenninger (Kewaskum)
Grand Nationals heat winners were, Tim Warner (Malone) Matt Yancey (She Falls) and Wenzel. Each heat race established a new track record on the fast track. Outlaw heat wins went to Zitzer, Justin Green and Simon.
