Matt Felten CUMBERLAND, Md. (May 15) - Daniel Cornman wrestled the lead away from Matt Sponaugle to get the win on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
Cornman became the fifth winner in five races for the Limited Late Models. Marcius VanMeter likewise became the fifth different Hobby Stock winner. Mike Desch captured the Street Stock win for the second straight week. Jason Riggleman won a close 4-Cylinder feature and Jim Crocker was the top driver in the Classic Racing Series.
Cornman, who started fourth, chased pole-sitter Matt Sponaugle to the halfway point and then used a restart to mount a challenge for the lead. When the race went green again on lap 12, Cornman throttled to the inside of Sponaugle and rode the bottom to the lead off of turn two.
Cornman led the final eight laps over Matt Howsare to the checkered flag. Howsare and third-place Matt Cosner had season-high finishes. After losing the lead, Matt Sponaugle dropped to fourth and had to recover from a spin to finish fourth. Last week's winner Matt Emerick finished fifth.
Desch captured his third victory of the season in the 16-lap Street Stock feature by passing Travis Brown on the penultimate lap. Desch had restarted in second behind Brown after Brown and leader John Whitfield tangled in turn three on the previous lap.
When the race resumed, Desch beat Brown into turn three for the lead and went on to win by a car length. Desch had started seventh and picked his way through the field while Brown and Whitfield battled for several laps up front.
Bob Jay finished the race in third with Kevin Deremer surviving heavy damage in an accident with Zane Weicht to finish fourth. Whitfield ended up fifth.
VanMeter went from fourth to first on the opening lap and left the field behind for most of the 15-lap Hobby Stock feature. VanMeter won by two seconds over Jarrod Brown, Justin Michael, Jimmy Sacco and Kevin Brown.
Jarrod Brown picked up second when Michael and Mike Moore got together in the final lap. Kevin Brown ran as high as second before falling in the running order to seventh with two laps to go.
Riggleman scored his second win in the 12-lap 4-Cylinder feature by holding off Jimmy Lepley and Jason Thompson to the finish line.
Riggleman was out front the entire way but Lepley, who started seventh, made a charge in the final three laps to get close. Riggleman won with just a door and nose ahead of Lepley at the checkered flag. Neil Bauer Jr. and Mike Lewis completed the top five.
Crocker was the runaway winner of the 20-lap Classic Racing Series feature. He beat Bill Brown Sr. to the finish with over a straightaway to spare. Brown had started ninth and battled with Matt Wallace for most of the final nine laps.
Brown passed Wallace on lap 16 and held him off to the finish line. Behind Wallace in third, Charlie Weaver and Steve Cantwell finished fourth and fifth.
The Rock will be off until Sunday, June 13, when the Steel Block Bandits series returns for the second time this season.
