Eric Westendorf SARVER, Penn. (May 14) - Weather threatened the claim another Fab Four Racing program, but the storm bands stayed well south of Sarver, PA allowing for another fantastic Friday Night at the Action Track! The brave men and women who defend our freedom were honored tonight on Armed Forces Night and the Pittsburgh Circle Track Club was on hand for their annual gathering.
The night kicked off with the Ti22 Performance DIRTcar Sprints and hometown hotshoe Carl Bowser started on the front row. From the drop of the green flag, Bowser looked like he had the field covered despite a fevered battled with Defending Track Champion Rod George. Despite a handful of cautions and navigating lapped traffic, Bowser seemed poised to claim his first feature of 2010. But with three laps to go, George threw a textbook slide job on Bowser through turns three & four to take the lead. Bowser took one last shot exiting turn four, but George was too far gone and is nearly impossible to catch from behind! The win was the 42nd of George's esteemed career. George and Bowser were followed across the stripe by Ed Lynch Jr., Charlie Holben and Danny Holtgraver. Jack Sodeman Jr. and Bob Felmlee checkered their respective heat races.
Despite starting on the outside pole, Late Model Hall of Famer Lynn Geisler's story was quite similar to Carl Bowser's. He took the lead as the green flag waved and appeared to have the car to beat. But from the fifth row, Gregg Satterlee was coming to the front through another stacked field of Late Models. Satterlee raced his way into contention and made his way around Hess and Geisler after six minor cautions during the middle stages of the 25-lap feature. "The Truth" took the lead on the lap 21 restart by powering low in turns one and two. Geisler tried to fight back on the highside entering turn three, but incidental contact with Satterlee sent Geisler spinning off turn three. With Geisler at the tail of the field, Satterlee cruised to his first Lernerville feature win of 2010; becoming the fifth different feature winner in five Late Model features. Budweiser Points Leader Dave Hess Jr. had another great run to finish second. Jared Miley battled Alex Ferree for third and beat him to the checkered flag. John Garvin Jr. had a solid run to round out the top five. Satterlee and Hess also won their heat races.
Tonight's Charapp Route 28 DIRTcar Sportsman feature only saw one lead change in 20 laps. Joe Kelley took the lead from polesitter and early leader Shawn Thorn on a lap nine restart and never looked back en route to his second straight win and third of the early 2010 season. Thorn and Kelley battled for the top spot for much of the race, but Thorn could never get the advantage back from Kelley and fell to fifth on the final lap. Kelley's back-to-back feature wins bring his division leading career win total to 35. The rest of the top five included Butch Lambert (subbing for Jason Fosnaught in the J19), Terry Young, Ryan Moyer, and Thorn. Heat race winners were Wayne Carbo and Terry Young.
The Diehl Auto Group DIRTcar Modifieds brought the house down with a scintillating battle between Del Rougeux Jr. and Jim Weller Jr. Rouguex started on the pole and jumped out to an early lead, but Weller started ninth and benefitted from an early caution involving Defending Track Champion Jeremiah Shingledecker, Dean Pearson and Dave Murdick. By lap six, Weller had taken second from Kevin Bolland and set his sights on the leader. Leadfoot Del Rougeux Jr. was wicked fast along the bottom and through the middle of both turns, but Weller had a rocketship around the top of the cushion. Rouguex and Weller swapped the lead too many times to count, splitting laps cars entering turns one and three, and drag racing down the straightaways. As the laps ticked off, they battled heavy lapped traffic, and in the end, Rougeux got hung up behind a lapped car just enough to allow Weller to sneak past him at the checkers to steal the win away in easily one of the best Modified races in the 43 year history of Don Martin's Lernerville Speedway! Rougeux begrudgingly settled for a disappointing, but very impressive second place finish. Kevin Bolland, Dave Murdick and Brian Swartzlander rounded out the top five. Heat races were claimed by Rougeux and Pearson.
Next Friday May 21, the Diehl Mods will take center stage again as the BRP Modified Tour rolls into Sarvertown for their first race at the Action Track in 2010. The other three divisions of Fab Four Racing will also be in action. The #1 Cochran Pace Truck and Diehl Auto Group Safety Truck will be on display this Sunday May 16 at Kennywood Park in support of the Pittsburgh Circle Track Club's annual Motorsports Day at the Pittsburgh Amusement Park!
