Matt Felten CUMBERLAND, Md. (May 8) - Leading every lap wasn't easy, but Matt Emerick was up to the challenge in the Limited Late Model feature on a windswept Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
Emerick, along with David Riley, who won his first Hobby Stock feature, became new winners for 2010 while three other drivers repeated victories. Mike Desch won the Street Stock feature. Jimmy Lepley won the 4-Cylinder race and Jamie Mills claimed the 6/8-Cylinder race.
Emerick's victory in the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature was his first since 2007. He was under intense pressure from Barry Miller at several junctures and held on over two restarts in the second half of the race over D.J. Troutman.
Miller first closed in on Emerick at lap five but gave up some track position prior to the first caution on lap 11. The restart allowed Troutman to get in the picture and Miller and Troutman traded second on laps 13 and 14.
When the last caution hit on lap 16, Emerick got away clean while Troutman and Miller fought again for second. Matt Sponaugle worked himself past Miller with two laps to go.
Emerick won by seven car lengths over Troutman, Sponaugle, Miller and Matt Howsare.
Desch got the lead from Mike Harvey early in the 16-lap Street Stock feature. Harvey led until lap three when Desch got enough of an opening to get around in turn three.
Desch went on to win by eight car lengths over Harvey, Greg Cornell, John Whitfield and Travis Brown. Cornell, Whitfield and Brown battled throughout the last half of the race. Cornell beat Whitfield by inches at the finish line for third.
Riley held the lead over Marcius VanMeter throughout the 15-lap Hobby Stock feature. Early on, Riley and Marcius VanMeter pulled away from the field as Mike VanMeter, Clay Logsdon, Jarrod Brown and three others raced in a pack.
Three cautions after the halfway point kept the field closer up to the finish. The final caution eliminated Mike VanMeter in a crash with R.T. Troutman. Riley still prevailed over Marcius VanMeter by two car lengths at the finish. Logsdon was third followed by Jarrod Brown and Jimmy Moreland.
Lepley was back in victory lane after leading the entire distance in the 4-Cylinder feature. Lepley and Jason Riggleman broke away from the field until the caution came out with two laps to go. Riggleman gave up second when he headed for the pits under caution.
Lepley pulled away from Mike Lewis, DacRon Powell and Jason Thompson on the restart to claim the win. Thompson made a paid of moves after the restart to get second from Lewis and Ray Wright beat out Powell for fourth.
Gary Proctor led early in the 6/8-Cylinder feature before Jamie Mills surged ahead from the outside on lap six to take the lead and the checkered flag in the 12-lap race. The win was the second straight for Mills.
Mills survived a spin with Joe Rodgers one lap before getting the lead from Proctor. Brian Ringer ran as high as second and finshed third. Bob Imes and James Clark completed the top five.
