West Liberty Raceway WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (May 1) - Brian Birkhofer has always had a strong connection to the West Liberty Raceway.
Saturday, the Muscatine driver returned to his favorite track and walked away with a $10,000 pay day at the May Days 2 Classic.
The 38-year-old passed Denny Eckrich on Lap 17 of a 50-lap feature at the Muscatine County Fairgrounds and led for the final 33 laps to earn the top prize.
It was the first victory of the season for Birkhofer, who won last year's event in West Liberty.
Birkhofer finished several car lengths ahead of second-place finisher Shannon Babb. Billy Moyer, a five-time world champion, placed third. Terry Phillips was fourth and Chad Simpson rounded out the top five.
Birkhofer, who finished second to Will Vault in the heat race, has put together his two best performances of the season in consecutive weeks. He took second April 23 at Bedford, Penn.
The drivers were scheduled to compete Friday night at the Farley Speedway for $10,000, but the event was called because of rain. It was rescheduled for Sunday, but weather interfered again.
Birkhofer is scheduled to compete at Lincoln, Ill., Friday night.
Also Saturday at West Liberty Raceway, Jeff Larson notched his first open wheel modified feature win of the year, edging Brad Dierks. He earned $600 for the triumph.
