MENOMONIE, Wisc. (April 17) - Brothers Jake and Jesse Redetzke entertained the crowd on opening night of the 2010 racing season at the Red Cedar Speedway as they engaged in a spirited family battle to determine the Late Model winner Friday. In the end, it was younger brother Jake who sat in victory lane at the end of their twenty lap contest. The other closely fought main event was in the Modifieds, where Minnesota traveler Dave Cain drove his way around local driver Mark Hessler to take the win in the open wheel headliner. Meanwhile, the other three main events featured walkovers by Shaun Huse, Mark Gerth and Chaz Ducommun as they drove to easy wins.
Jesse Redetzke flanked Scott Gilberts as the Late Model field took the green flag from Rick Cook for their main event with Redetzke using the middle lane of the track to pull into the early lead. Jesse was able to pull a few car lengths on the field as Jake moved in to challenge Gilberts for second. Behind them, Ashley Anderson, Chris Oertel, Chad Mahder and Rick Hanestad were fighting hard for position. Gilberts and Jake Redetzke continued their battle for second when the yellow flag waved for debris on the track.
The new, double file restarts initiated this year allowed Jake to get a good run on Gilberts and motor past into the second spot, after which he quickly closed in on his brother. They then locked up in a duel for the lead, with Jake looking to the low side of Jesse, but the elder brother refusing to yield the lead. Finally, Jake was able to get a good run off turn four and ease past into the lead.
A late yellow when Mahder lost a good position due to a spin bunched the field again and Gilberts was able to slip into second when Jesse went high in turn four. However, there was no catching Jake who motored on to the win over Gilberts, Jesse Redetzke, Hanestad and Anderson.
