Matt Felten CUMBERLAND, Md. (April 10) - Virginia driver Walker Arthur was victorious in the headline Steel Block Bandits series event on the opening weekend of racing on Friday and Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
Arthur, of Forest, Va., overcame a bad start to reclaim the lead for the $3,000 win in the 40-lap feature. Weekend winners in other divisions included Bill Replogle and Jimmy Lepley on Friday night, and Daryl Whetstone and Gary Proctor on Saturday night.
Arthur, who set the fastest time and won a heat race in the debut of the Bandits series at The Rock, started on the pole. When the race went green, Arthur slid high in the first turn and dropped four spots. Matt Sponaugle temporarily led the race until a multi-car crash in turn four before the first lap was official put the field back to its original order and reinstalled Arthur on the pole.
Arthur got it right on the second attempt, and led the race through three more cautions over Sponaugle, Allen Brannon, Andy Fries, Matt Howsare and Daniel Cornman.
Fries' night ended on lap 13 and set up Sponaugle to make his first challenge to Arthur's lead. On the restart the Wiley Ford, W.Va., driver pulled even with Arthur in first turn but was denied the lead when Arthur battled back on the high side. The race settled down until after the fuel stop at lap 20.
Cornman became a factor after taking third from Brannon on lap 25 and the race up front heated up on the next three laps. Sponaugle drove inside of Arthur again, and both drivers rubbed fenders in turn four and again in turn two on the next lap. Arthur kept the lead and Cornman grabbed second away from Sponaugle on lap 28.
Arthur eventually built a three-second lead over Cornman until a caution on the last lap left him with a six car length advantage over Cornman, Howsare, Sponaugle and Brannon.
