CANEY, Kans. (April 25) - With threatening skies overhead the season opener for the MidwestDirt Late Model Series got in just before heavy rain soaked the area.

Only 10 competitors checked in for the season opening event held at the Caney Valley Speedway, but the quality of the racing easily out-weighed the quanity.

Bartlesville, Oklahoma's Joseph Gorby led the field to the green with Valley Center, Kansas pilot Jimmy Segraves to his outside. The two battled side by side for the first two circuits before a yellow flew for Chase Meade who rolled to a stop on the inside of the backstrech.

On the restart Gorby continued to pressure Segraves but began falling back as Segraves found a line on the outside. Chuck Comer, aboard his #83 spec motor car, worked his way up from the 4th place starting position to take 2nd away from Gorby and begin the task of chasing down a now distant Segraves. Another yellow was brought out after contact was made between Gorby and Justin Hoepker, leaving Hoepker stopped in turn 2.

With the field close together again Segraves jumped out to the lead but it wasn't long before Comer began to make moves on Segraves. Comer moved to the bottom and ran side by side with Segraves for the lead for nearly the second half of the race. Comer finally got a good run off of turn 2 to pull ahead of Segraves and cross the stripe first to score the inaugural win in the MDLMS. Segraves settled for second with Brad Fortney in third, Gary Gorby fourth, and Joseph Gorby fifth.

Comer and Andy Gerstonkorn picked up the heat race wins. In the redraw for the feature Joseph Gorby drew the pole after finishing second in the second heat.

Gary Gorby picked up the hard charger designation for the evening, starting 8th and finishing 4th.

The next event set for the MidwestDirt Late Model Series is May 9, 2009 at the Caney Valley Speedway in Caney, Kansas.
