Bob Appleget CLEVELAND, Tenn. (April 25) - On a balmy Saturday night Cleveland Speedway kicked off their 2009-point races and David Payne made his trip from Murphy, NC pay by winning the Late Model feature.
From his outside front row starting position Payne would take the lead at the drop of the green and never looked back as he was able to keep Kevin Gibson and Brad Coffee behind him for all 30 laps. Another North Carolina driver, Gabe Wilson was fourth with Shorty Frazier rounding out the top five.
Rounding out the top 10 were Bobby Griffin, Mike Tinker, John Ownbey, Dewayne Powell and Lee Sutton.
Glenn Seaton III put the pedal to the medal and won the Limited Late Model feature. While Seaton was leading wire to wire Trig Parris, Tanner Works, Nick Yancy and Brian Burke for the next four spots. Parris would move past Burke for second thirteen laps into the 20-lap feature. Works, Yancy and Burke would battle behind the lead duo with Works crossing the line in third, Yancy fourth. Burke would settle for fifth.
Lamar Scoggins took the lead on the first lap and led every lap of the Crate Late Model feature to take his second win of the young season. Allen Green was second, Brian Jackson third, Bobby Doss fourth and Chris Barnett was fifth.
Taking the lead on lap 12 of the 20-lap A-Hobby feature Robbie Greene was able to keep Dustin Cansler and Chris Stewart at bay to take the win. Chuck Cooper would lead the first lap with Cansler taking the top spot on the second circuit. Cansler would hold the lead until Greene moved by to take the point. Stewart would relegate Cansler to third for five laps before he began to fade and Cansler moved back into the runner up spot. Jesse Lowe would take and finish third, Mitch Brady Jr. fourth and David Gervals fifth.
Jimmy Smith would take the win in B-Hobby with a dominant win over Chad Collins, Shane Nunley, Jim Rominger and Sonny Graves.
With a mirror full of Jimmy Elliott, Billy Callahan led every lap to take the Pony feature win. Elliott settled for second with Tim Ladd third. Mathew Gainer and Tucker Bolton rounded out the top five.
Catherine Frazier scored her first Front Runner feature win Saturday night. Frazier moved into the top spot on the third lap and lead the remaining nine laps to take the win. Bill Bailey was second, Shayne Forgey third, Richard Hickman fourth and Michael Arp fifth.
