Steve Hixson GLENCOE, Ala. (April 23) - James "BINKY" Ward of Lettsworth, Louisiana added his name to the Green Valley Speedway record books, Thursday night in Alabama. Dennis Harker's facility in Glencoe/Gadsden based dirt track, presented THE ROAD TO DEGA 2 with Super Late Model topping the racing card. NASCAR and SPEEDTv star Kenny Wallace, who signed autographs piloted his Open Wheel Modified around the 3/8 mile clay banked track to victory, while second generation Late Model star Travis Pennington collected the $1,000. in the Crate Late Model feature. New clay was laid this week, and Ward had no problem setting fast time over the twenty-five (25) car SLM field. Starting from the pole of the "CONTINENTAL COIN LAUNDRIES" 30 lap, $2,500. to-WIN event, Ward piloting his # W3 "Triple A Diesel Service, Dickey Allen Service" sponsored Russell Baker powered machine, had stout competition. World of Outlaw Late Model series superstar CAT-DADDY Clint Smith, regional standout Tony Knowles and two time DIRT TRACK WORLD CHAMPION Ronnie Johnson made up the first two rows of the starting grid after qualifying.
Two heat races locked in the remaining racers to the field with local ace Mike Pearl taking heat # 1, beating pole sitter Jake Knowles to the checkers. An all Georgia heat # 2 went to pole starter Anthony Hill, with Steven Endicott finishing second. As the "A" Main Feature field readied for green, outside pole sitter Smith pulled in with smoke billowing from beneath his machine, giving RJ the cat-birds seat. As green waved over the field Johnson took command. The delight of the crowd favorite, for the CHATTANOOGA FLASH, soon dissipated when RJ pitted and turned over the lead to Ward. Tony Knowles tried everything for the next twenty-something circuits, but had his hands full of local hot-shoe T.J. Alford. Last Friday's winner LIL' Lee Sutton faded as did fellow Georgian Jeff Smith, but it was the FIRST LADY of LATE MODELS April Farmer putting on the show. Coming from her 12th starting spot, the Livingston, TN racer cracked the Top 5 and would cross the checkers to finish 4th, behind Knowles and Alford. Local racer Doug King also wowed the GVS faithful racing from the tail end of the field to finish 5th at the events conclusion. Next Friday, May 1st GVS hosts a Full Racing Program with SLM's & Crate LM's topping the program. For more details and Full Results visit the tracks web-site www.greenvalleyspeedway.com.
