Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (April 18) - A surge of Late Models fell upon the Cottage Grove Speedway last Saturday night with a great crop of drivers. The night started with Casey Vitale current track record holder setting fast time of the night at 14.06 seconds. In the Vintage Inn Family Restaurant Trophy Dash Vitale was able to take over the lead after a caution on the first lap leader Greg Schellhorn of Eugene had a flat right rear and Vitale was able to take the lead and the win.
Despite the week previous where only on heat was run last Saturday seen two. In the first heat Casey Vitale had problems on lap one and came to a halt. Art Hiatt of Eugene had trouble on lap four in turns three and four land would be the last caution of the heat. Craig Hanson of Albany went on to pick up the heat race victory once all the cautions got out of the way. In heat two no cautions occurred and the Redmond native Mark Carroll went on to the victory.
In the feature it started out with the front row having difficulties. Mike DeSilva of Springfield and Cottage Grove's Rob Williams unfortunately couldn't start the race evenly so after two attempts they were replaced with Don Muth Sr. of Cottage Grove and Hanson. Muth would lead the opening laps would have a terrific battle with Craig Hanson.
Meanwhile on lap sixteen Mike DeSilva who had worked his way from the back to inside the top five but spun in the backstretch. Turns three and four had two incidents with Greg Schellhorn on lap nineteen and Art Hiatt on lap twenty six. Hanson late in the race had gotten around Muth for the lead and now Mark Carroll was battling for second. Hanson went on to win his first race of the season with Muth in second, Carroll third, DeSilva coming back to finish in fourth, and Randy Martin of Eugene rounded up the top five.
