SPRING VALLEY, Minn. (April 11) - A very nice day in Southern Minnesota brought out a very nice field of cars and a good crowd of spectators as Deer Creek Speedway opened up its 2009 racing season.

A full field of 24 WISSOTA Late Models were on hand for opening night with Rick Hanestad pacing the field and jumping into the early lead. Mike Prochnow sat in second early with Kevin Keuhn in third. Hanestad slowly pulled away early while Keith Foss started working on Keuhn for third spot with twenty to go. Three laps later Foss moved under Prochnow and was starting to pressure Hanestad for the lead. A caution with sixteen to go put Foss and Prochnow side by side, the two raced that way for three laps under Foss took the spot and moved under Hanestad all in one move. Another caution came out the next lap and this time Foss took off in the lead. Pat Doar started working the low line and moved into third while further back a large pack of cars battle for the sixth through twelfth spot as they were two and three wide in this pack to the finish. Foss came home with the win followed by Hanestad and Doar. Lance Matthees and Doug Herrick rounded out the top five. Heat race wins went to Keuhn, Nick Herrick and Foss.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks put on a whale of a show as is normal for the Street Stocks at Deer Creek. As is typical of many openers there were a lot of visiting drivers and fans from around WISSOTA Country. Some are always surprises but the biggest surprise was to see Danny Hanson out on the track with his 2008 car after destroying his new car on Thursdays practice night. The first lap of the Street Stock feature saw a five car incident in turn two sending a couple cars to the pits. On the restart the streeters came out of turn two four wide and the race was on. Travis Berends and Tim Johnson were the two to pull out as they raced for the lead. Berends took control of the event early while Johnson now battle with Cory Crapser and Dan Bork for second. They went three wide in turn four on the second lap with Crapser and Johnson touching allowing Bork to take control of second. Crapser started to pressure Bork on the next lap but lost control of the machine and spun to the infield restarting at the rear. Karl Hewitt Jr. joined Johnson and Bork for the second place battle until they went three wide out of four and contact ensued with Hewitt Jr., catching a flat tire. Another restart with Berends leading and Danny now working up to fourth after starting 8th was ended as Hanson and Troy Voth made contact bringing out another caution. On the restart with eight to go Johnson took the lead and never relinquished it again to the end. At this point most of the crowd was watching Crapser as he charged his way back to the front eventually taking over the second spot with two to go. Johnson took home the win, Crapser second and Berends third. Johnson, Crapser and AJ Zvorak took home the wins in the earlier heat races.

Jason Born jumped out front in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature event and unfortunately brought out the first caution of the night needing a complete restart. On the restart Albert Wytaske jumped out to the early lead with AJ Wiste right behind him in second. Greg Pfeifer Jr., sat in third while Wiste ran a lower line and moved alongside of Wytaske for the lead. The top way was the fast way early with Wytaske holding the point by a slight margin while Jerry Young and Kenny Wytaske raced for fourth. A restart wtih thirteen to go say Albert continue leading with Wiste pressuring him. Brandon Davis found the extreme bottom line to his liking as he started his charge forward and with eleven to go found himself in the third position. Nine to go and Davis worked under Wiste for the second spot and set his sights on Wytaske up front. With five to go the top three were very tight and raced almost three wide for the lead. Davis took the point with four to go and hung on to take home the win followed by Wytaske and Wiste. Dennis Jones took home the "B" feature with Wiste, Shane Sabraski, PFeifer JR., Young and Kenny Wytaske taking home the heat wins.

Jeff Brauer led early in the WISSOTA Super Stocks with Dan Gullikson tight behind in second. Shawn Huse quickly moved up from sixth to take over the third spot. Don Eischens raced with Huse for third early on. A restart with seventeen to go saw Gullikson take the top spot, Huse moved into second while Brauer and Eischens raced for third. With twelve to go Huse and Gullikson were side by side at the line. After two quick restarts they continued their race for the lead up front with Huse getting the edge two laps later. Ross Dixon was on the move now and was racing Eischens for third. These two put on a great battle for four laps until Dixon didn't quite clear a slide job and Eischens returned the favor in turn four bringing out the caution as the two stopped on the speedway with both drivers sent to the tail. Huse led the final five laps running low on the speedway while Gullikson worked the top. Gullikson pulled alongside a couple times but was unable to move past Huse for the lead. Brauer came home fourth wtih Cole Queensland rounding out the top five. Huse, Dixon and Corey Tammen won the earlier heat races.

In this part of the state the USRA Modifieds rule the roost for the fans and tonight a handfull of WISSOTA Modifieds drivers threw their hats into the ring to give it a shot. A total of twenty six cars pulled onto the track for heat race action with Brad Waits, Mike Sorensen, Jacob Dahle and Todd Scharkey taking home the heat wins. The WISSOTA drivers held their own with one having the crowd on their feet during the feature event. Dahle took the lead early on in the feature with Layne Meyer charging hard on his outside. Meyer went for a pass on lap three, the two touched lightly and Dahle went spinning to the infield. Doug HIllson took the lead on the restart with Dahle and Scharkey racing side by side fo rsecond. The three then went three wide for the lead with Scharkey taking control of the event. With nineteen to go Dave Cain jumped to the highside of the track and took off like a rocket. He was in seventh on lap eighteen. On lap seventeen he was in second with Mike Sorensen racing him on the low side as they flew by Hillson. Sorensen slowed Cain's momentum and that was the end of the run for Cain as the top slicked off and the extra bite he found went away but it was an incredible run for two laps. With fifteen to go Sorensen moved up to race with Scharkey for the lead. Sorensen took control with thirteen to go while Steve Wetzstein sat in fourth behind Cain. Wetzstein was making the bottom work and moved past Cain for third with five laps left. At the line it was Sorensen with his first win in two years at the speedway followed by Scharkey, Wetzstein, Cain and Waits.
