Harlan Osbourne PETALUMA, Calif. (March 28) - In Petaluma Speedway's Late Model season opener Randy Shafer looked unbeatable as he breezed to victory in the heats, and he appeared to carry that momentum into the 12-car feature where he quickly opened a sizable lead, but a mechanical problem halted Shafer's prowess on Lap 5, opening the door for eighth-starting Nick Perivolaris to take charge over Chevy McGinnis, Rick Shafer, John Silva, and Rod Arnold. The top five was rearranged after Silva and Arnold tangled on Lap 8 as Perivolaris continued to battle with McGinnis. The two front-runners were approaching the finish line after 13 laps when McGinnis' front side rode up on Perivolaris' right rear locking the two race cars together. As the field sped past, led by Guglielmoni, McGinnis and Perivolaris sat helpless. Due to time limitations the race was checkered at that point with the victory going to defending track champ Guglielmoni, followed by 79-year-old Late Model icon Larry Damitz, who'd started 10th. Arnold finished third, followed by Rick Shafer, heat winner Silva, Perivolaris, Shawn DeForest, McGinnis, Souza, Randy Shafer, and Joe Tachis.
