Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (September 19) - It was a long, long, long night Welt & Welt Inc. Championship Night at the Cottage Grove Speedway not in regards of the program running too late or anything of that nature. The reason was that particapents and fans alike were on the edge of their seat all afternoon because of a heavy mist that lingered around the area for some time, eventually the mist disappeared only to return and transform into a light rain. The light rain eventually disappeared and it looked like we were ready to start things until a rain shower dampened the facility yet again but from some miracle it stopped and the sun came out and it didn't rain for the rest of the night.
The situation did take a long time for the program to get started and due to time constraints there would be no qualifications or heat races. The heat races would be lined up by pill draw with passing points awarded to cars that passed and points taken away for cars that got passed. The top six in the heats after all the points were tallied up would draw pills for their starting positions for the main events. With some other tracks in the area already raining out a good number of cars filled the ranks of the Late Models and Modifieds for the final points race of 2009.
Officially starting the night for the evening was the Late Models picking up from where they left off the week before. The week previous their main event got rained out after two laps were completed. The main event started single file with two laps down as if it hadn't ended.
Dustin Comer of Springfield was able to do a magnificent job and takeover the race from the front spot and drive away with a comfortable lead. Only one caution occurred in the eighteen lap race but it did not slow down Comer as he was able to go on to his first career victory in a Late Model. Don Muth Sr. of Cottage Grove was able to finish in the second spot followed by Paul Culp of Springfield, Kreg Britton of Cottage Grove, Jake Mayden of Cheshire rounding up the top five.
Later on in the evening in heats were ran and with the large car count the field was divided into three heat races. In the first heat race Craig Hanson of Albany was able to win the caution free affair to start the heat action off. In heat two Jimmy Whisler of Otis was able to lead the entire distance to win heat two with only one caution occurring. In the third and final heat race Ryan Gerig of Sweet Home was able to make a late race pass in incident free eight lap affair.
In the main event there was great racing all over the racetrack with Jimmy Whisler taking the advantage early in the race but would be ran down by Justin Dittman of Albany and Ryan Gerig. Five incidents occurred during the entire main event and things got very interesting as the three leaders approached the tail end of lapped traffic. Gerig took over the race lead on the last lap and got stuck in traffic and it was Whisler making the move to take the lead out of the final corner. Dittman would beat out Gerig for the second spot followed by Trevor Glaser from Tangent and Don Muth Sr. rounding up the top five.
