PETALUMA, Calif. (September 9) - The powerful rumble of Late Model race cars will fill the air at Petaluma Speedway Saturday night, Sept. 12, when the top Late Model drivers in California descend on the fast 3/8-mile banked adobe oval for the 30th annual M. Maselli & Sons Dirt Late Model Classic. One of the Petaluma Speedway's signature races and the longest running event of its kind in California, the Maselli Classic is expected to draw a full contingent of Late Model challengers vying for the $3000 winner's share of the purse.
Originated in 1980 as a two-night open show capped by a 100-lap main event, the first three Maselli & Sons races were won by Steve Vaughan of Carson. Over the years nearly every top Late Model driver has competed in the annual event. Included among the list of past winners are Jim Tryon, Mike Gustafson, Larry Damitz, Chad Reichenbach, and Ed Sans Jr.
Topping the list of drivers expected to be at the front of this week's 40-lap feature are four-time Maselli winner, and 2009 Petaluma Speedway Late Model champion John Silva of Fremont, 2008 winner Jeff Decker of Morgan Hill, two-time winner Richard Papenhausen of Chico, former winner Bobby Hogge IV, Kellen Chadwick, Brad Pounds, four-time Petaluma Speedway track champion Rod Arnold, and 2008 track champ Paul Guglielmoni. Also expected to make the trek to Petaluma are drivers from the Western Late Model All-Stars.
