Matt Felten CUMBERLAND, Md. (August 29) - The regular season came to a dramatic conclusion--suspenseful, heartbreaking and congratulatory--as drivers took their last shots at getting to victory lane and championships remained up for grabs well into night of racing Saturday at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
Daniel Cornman picked up his first win by taking the George Hilliard Memorial for the Limited Late Models in, hands down, the most thrilling last lap of the season for the class. D.J. Troutman was crowned the champion of the Limited Late Models. Dave Brown became the unlikely champion and winner after a heart-wrenching crash in the Street Stocks. Ryan Peer won the feature but ended up short in the points on the final turn to Nick Iski for the Factory Stock 4-Cylinder championship.
Cornman fought off Tim Smith Jr. in the final trip of the 20-lap feature, inching ahead out of turn four with Smith to his inside to get across the finish line. The excitement was set up by a caution on the final lap.
The race restarted with Cornman, who could have coasted to victory with an insurmountable lead before the caution, and Smith going wheel to wheel on the restart in the turns. Cornman stayed in the outside groove in turns three and four and Smith drove beneath him before losing the dash to the line by a few feet.
Smith came on late to get to second before the final caution. He started 10th and passed his way to second by lap 15. Cornman led from the outset.
Matt Cosner grabbed his best finish of the season with third and 12th-starting Derek Byler claimed fourth. Matt Sponaugle ended up fifth. Troutman secured the championship with a ninth-place finish.
