SANTA MARIA, Calif. (August 22) -  Super Late Model Stocks and Factory Stocks were on track Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway. Powder Puff races for ladies, in both the MMI Factory Stock and Toste Grading & Paving Mini Stock divisions, were also a part of the show.

John Lowrey, of Bakersfield, and Steve Drake, of San Luis Obispo, battled for the lead for the first third of the 30-lap Late Model main event before being involved in an on-track incident. Drake was able to recover and come back to a fourth place finish ahead of Bakersfield's Rob Sanders. Mike Kirby, of Torrance; Nick Bartels, of El Segundo; and, A.J. Kirkpatrick, of Castroville, were the top-three in the event. Lowrey set fast time of 14.113 seconds and Jerry Stewart, of Bakersfield, won the 4-lap trophy dash. Eight-lap heat races were clinched by Kirby, Stewart, and Lowrey.

Gary Rayburn, Jr., of Grover Beach, scored his second consecutive Factory Stock victory in their 25-lap feature. Point leader Dale Sylvester, of Arroyo Grande, was the runner-up, followed by Bakersfield's Jeremiah VanScoy, Santa Maria's Doug Jeffers, and Corona's Mike Malcolm. Rayburn completed a perfect night by winning the 4-lap trophy dash as-well-as an 8-lap heat race. Chuck Barfoot, of Pismo Beach, and Tim Correia, of Nipomo, captured the other heats.

Arroyo Grande drivers swept the two Powder Puff events. Taelor Janes taking the win in the 15-lap Factory Stock event, and Terri Guzman turning the trick in the 12-lap Mini Stock race.

Next Saturday night Five Star Grafix presents the Modified Clash for Papich Construction IMCA Modifieds. Cars and drivers from throughout California are expected to converge on the Speedway for this $1,500.00 to win, $100.00 to start premier event. MMI Factory Stocks and Toste Grading & Paving Mini Stocks will also be on the program. Admission will be $14.00 for adults, $12.00 for seniors and military and their spouses, and $5.00 for children six to twelve. Kids five and under are free. Gates for this special event will open at the 4:00 p.m., with hot laps at 4:30 p.m. and racing at 6:00 p.m. SMS is located 1/4-mile north of the US 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road.
