Sam Stoecklin WARRENSBURG, Mo. (July 25) - Unseasonable weather patterns continued last evening at CMS for week number 13 of the 2009 championship campaign. After a night of thunderstorms rolled through the Warrensburg area in the early hours Saturday morning, fans were greeted with abundant sunshine and comfortable temps for edge-of-your seat competition from the drivers signed in for competition for the night's races.
The full-bodied cars and drivers of the ULMA late model division set up for their two heat races. For qualifying heat number one, Allen Perryman of Belton visited victory lane for the first time in quite some time with a convincing win ahead of Bob King, Dwight Niehoff, Danny Monroe, and Brian Pipes. Heat two went to last week's feature winner Randy Ainsworth, over Jon Binning, Bob Test, Danny Lorton, and John Pipes. Perryman and Ainsworth started up front at the drop of the green flag for the late model feature race. Close competition through the field for each position was the highlight of the race as several drivers ran strong for top-tier finishes. Ainsworth was trying to become the first repeat winner in nine races with nine different winners this year and looked strong early on as he led the majority of the race until some late-race caution flag periods slowed the race. The field was slowed on several occasions just as Bob King found a fast line on the high side of the track with several passes on Ainsworth for the lead. Each time the yellow came out, the last completed lap leader resumed the lead on the restart as Ainsworth tried to hold back King in second. Bob Test ran strong in the field behind the leaders in third in a great battle with Danny Monroe and Dwight Niehoff. With a green-white-checkered flag finish looming; King powered his way around Ainsworth to claim the top spot. Ainsworth tried to stay with him on the low side but King went on to become the tenth different winner in ten races! It was King's first ULMA feature win of the year as the crowd roared with thunderous applause when he exited the car in victory lane. Ainsworth settled for second with Bob Test third. Monroe again ran strong and came away with his second-consecutive fourth place finish just in front of Dwight Niehoff, who ran to a strong fifth-place run with an injured wrist. Danny Lorton with smooth run in in the field finished in the sixth position.
