PHENIX CITY, Ala. (July 18) - Some of the best drivers in the south were on hand for The Racing Zone 50 lap Late Model feature event Saturday night at East Alabama Motor Speedway. Starting the night off right Richie Stephens set the fast time in Extreme Power Sports pole qualifying with a lap of 15.71 seconds. Travis Pennington timed in with the second fastest time while Dana Eiland timed in third fastest. Some of the areas best cars were on hand to battle door to door for $3000 and win the first annual Racing Zone 50. With the line up set, the field was ready for the green flag. Quickly Stephens jumped in front of Pennington to lead the field into turn one. Pennington seemed content to ride in Stephens tire tracks as the duo began to pull away from third place running Dana Eiland. Eiland in a fierce battle for third with Terrance Nowell and Larry Harrod looked to be laying back to save his tires. On lap 15 the first caution of the night would be for the spinning car of Jimmy Evilsizer in turns 3 and 4. With Evilsizer rejoining the field at the back, the green was displayed and Stephens and Pennington again started to put distance between them and Dana Eiland. Again the top five seemed content to ride and save their tires for the end. Then on lap 24 the caution would wave when Montana Dudley took a ride off the track in turns 1 and 2. Dudley, who qualified uncharacteristically in the back of the pack, for the feature had quickly been working his way toward the front until he went for a ride off the track. The race would go green for one lap before the caution was displayed again for an accident involving Terrance Nowell, Marc Gooden, and Chase Edge. After the track was cleared and all the cars involved rejoined the pack we were ready to see the green once again. Like before the duo of Stephens and Pennington started to pull away. The battle for third was still a three-car fight but now someone new was in the mix. Pat Wall had worked his way around Terrance Nowell and brought Bobby Eiland with him. As the laps slowly wound down it looked as if the race was going to come down to a battle between Stephens and Pennington and it look as if Pennington was getting tired of riding. Then on lap 43 the caution waved for debris giving Pennington time to cool his tires and make one last run at Stephens and a $3000 dollar payday. The green was out and so was Stephens, out front that is. Stephens' initially began to put distance between himself and Pennington, something he hadn't done all night. Then with the checkers in the air Richie Stephens crossed the line first and taking home the win in the first annual "The Racing Zone 50". Travis Pennington was second with Dana Eiland third, Pat Wall fourth, and Bobby Eiland passing Montana Dudley on the last lap for fifth.
