Mike Leone MARKLEYSBURG, Penn. (June 27) - After a one-month layoff, the FASTRAK Northeast Late Model Touring Series returned to action on Saturday night at Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex. Ron Brutt's beautiful facility played host to event #4 of 17 on the 2009 circuit and the first ever at the Markleysburg, Pa. oval. A field of 30 cars with drivers from four different states gathered on a gorgeous summer night.
Bobby Powell redeemed himself one night after his apparent FASTRAK Weekly Series Late Model win at Raceway 7 was taken away after coming light at the scales by winning his first Northeast Touring Series event of the season. The $1,200 victory came in the 25-lap feature and was Powell's third of his career in Northeast Touring Series competition.
The Waterford, Pa. standout started fifth and raced his way into second on the opening lap. Powell hounded track regular Garry Sisson for the first 20 laps before finally making the winning move on the 21st circuit. Powell would lead the final five laps in the Scott Bidwell-owned, Fame RV Center/Jay's Auto Wrecking/Maloney Tool & Mold-sponsored #B1D. Powell has now won at least one Northeast Touring Series event in the three-year history of the series and moved into a four-way tie for second on the all-time win list.
Ricky Meglaye made his first career Touring Series a successful one by recording an excellent second place finish after getting by Sisson on lap 21. Dan Angelicchio, who started 15th, took over the Northeast Touring Series point lead by finishing third after getting around Sisson on lap 23. Angelicchio has now finished in the top seven in all four events thus far this season. Sixteen-year-old Late Model rookie, Bud Watson, continues to impress everyone as he came home a Northeast Touring Series best fourth after starting 12th. Sisson dropped to a disappointing fifth after leading the first 20 circuits.
Completing the top 10 were Max Blair, Josh Holtgraver, Kyle Thomas, Carl McKinney, and Tommy Schirnhofer, Jr. It was a rough night for David Scott and Mike Pegher, Jr., who entered the night first and second in points, as they were credited with 19th and 15th respectively.
Scoring heat race wins were Derek Doll, Blair, and Powell, while track regular Roger Laughlin copped the B main.
