LEBANON, Ore. (June 13) - Jeremy Shank finally won the hard way.

The Outlaw class points leader from Salem came from the back of the pack after setting fast time to win Saturday's A-Main event at Lebanon's Willamette Speedway.

It was Shank's second win in four races. His other main event this year came after setting fast time in the DIRTcar Northwest I-5 Series at the track, but that series starts the fast timers in the front.

The 1/3-mile oval had fresh clay on it the past two weeks, making it the best track for passing it has been this season.

Tory Swayngim took the initial lead from the outside pole position, but two laps after a lap 10 restart, Brett McCutcheon got by for the lead on the low side. Meanwhile that same lap, Shank moved into the top five after dicing his way through the field.

Shank worked his way up to third when a caution flew for the car of Robert Hoefs died on the backstretch. On the restart Shank gave up his low line and went high. He passed Swayngim on the 26th lap, got by McCutcheon for the lead two laps later and held off numerous challenges from McCutcheon over the final 12 laps for the win.

"The last restart, I would have went down low after I passed him, but I didn't know I was clear and he was racing me clear so I didn't want to take his line away," Shank said. "I knew I had enough straightaway speed to get them to the flagstand if it came down to that.

"But then after the restart, I was like I'm going to the bottom. I'm making them work around me if they're going to pass me. The track was racy."

McCutcheon placed second with ninth starting Darren Coffell in third, Swayngim in fourth and Justin Dittman of Albany in fifth.

Rob Mayea of Bend took the lead on the fourth lap and led the rest of the way to win the Outlaw B-Main event. Todd Shandy was second and late-arriving John Campos was third.

Defending Super Sport champion Russ Sell of Brownsville came back from a spin on the third lap to win the A-Main event.

Sell set fast time in the class and was moving through the pack when he spun and went to the back of the pack. He then patiently worked his way through the pack and passed Brett James with six laps to go and went on to the victory.

James held on to finish second with Billy Workman Jr. in third. Justin Evans won the Super Sport B-Main event from the pole position with Jack Marontate and Butch Valdez rounding out the top three.

David Cronk continued his domination of the Sportsman class.

The class points leader from Portland came from the final starting spot to take the lead on a restart on the seventh lap from fourth place, and went on to the A-Main. Dittman placed second and Mike Bennett finished third. Casey Rhoades won the Sportsman B-Main. Bob Kingsberry won the Classic Sportsman A-Main.

The track returns to action Saturday with a points race.
