NEW RICHMOND, Wisc. (June 13) - Jimmy Mars has certainly visited Victory Lane at the Cedar Lake Speedway many times in his career, but his win over Rick Egersdorf on Saturday night June 13 in the NASCAR Late Model division might have been his narrowest margin of victory yet. Aided by a caution with nine laps to go, Mars moved past Adam Hensel for second and began his race with Egersdorf for the lead over the next several laps. As the pair raced side-by-side to the checkers, Mars held off Egersdorf by about a foot for his third win of the season. Mars Stated in his post-race interview, "The crowd certainly got their money's worth tonight." A very accurate statement, as racing in the other NASCAR divisions was also entertaining.

Prior to the exciting finish in the NASCAR Late Model feature race, Andy Jones topped a great three car battle in the late stages of the NASCAR Midwest Modified feature to gain his second CLS win in 2009. Cory Davis raced ahead of the field following a series of early cautions to post his first win of the season in NASCAR Pro Stock action. Reigning supreme for the fifth time in 2009, Darrell Nelson held off Ron Schreiner and Jason Miller in the NASCAR Modified main event. The quick-paced racing program saw a field of 106 cars sign into the pits on a fantastic late spring evening that turned cool when rain to the north of the track brought a change in temperature for a portion of the night. New clay was added to the track during the week along with some expert work from the track maintenance crew which produced a racy track for the features.

On some race nights, the best is saved for the last event. This was the case tonight in the 30 lap NASCAR Late Model feature. With Mike Bear and Rick Egersdorf bringing the 25 car starting field to the green, Egersdorf immediately charged into the lead from his outside row one starting spot while Bear and Rick Hanestad battled for second. Adam Hensel moved past Hanestad on lap five and put the pressure on Bear for second. Hanestad dropped out of the race on lap eight, as the leaders began to encounter lapped traffic. Hensel got by Bear for second on lap ten and began to chip away at the large lead Egersdorf had built. Continuing to work lapped traffic, Hensel closed in on Egersdorf over the next several laps while John Kaanta, Mike Nutzmann and 12th starter Jimmy Mars had a great battle for the 4-6 spots. A few laps past the halfway mark, Hensel had reeled in Egersdorf and the race was on for the lead. Meanwhile, Mars had emerged from the three car battle for fourth and was rapidly closing in on Bear for third. Mars moved to third on lap 19 but found himself a good distance behind the lead duo. The lone caution of the race waved with 21 laps in the books for a spin in turn four by Jeff Patchen. This caution certainly changed the complexion of the race for the lead. On the restart, Mars ducked underneath Hensel for second on lap 22 and then began a great race for the top spot over the final eight laps. It was Egersdorf on the cushion and Mars in the low to middle lanes. As the white flag appeared, Mars moved ahead of Egersdorf. Egersdorf regained the lead briefly on the backstretch on the final lap, but Mars once again held the point exiting turn four. The drag race to the checkers was on and the crowd rose to their feet for the exciting finish. It was Mars by about a foot at the finish line over Egersdorf. Hensel, Kaanta and Nutzmann completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Steve Laursen, Joel Cryderman, Bear, Jake Redetzke, and Brent Larson. NASCAR Late Model heat races were won by Hanestad, Mars and Kaanta.
