COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (June 13) - Last Saturday night was the first race for the Late Models since May 30th and a good field showed up to take home the price money once again at the Cottage Grove Speedway. The Late Models were the support for the 2009 version of the Cottage Grove Speedway Modified Nationals, which attracted forty Modifieds from the region.

In the first class of the evening fast time for the Late Models went to Jimmy Whisler of Otis at 12.978 second which would be the fastest time of the year qualified so far and also was his first fast time of the year. In trophy dash action Redmond's Mark Carroll was able to hold off a hard charging Casey Vitale of Albany for his first dash win of the year.

In heat race action for the night Jimmy Whisler was able to win the first heat race, which was caution free and was Whisler's first heat race win of the year. In heat two there was only one caution that occurred. Despite the caution Casey Vitale was able to win his fourth heat race win of the season. The invert for the main event was a six so the fast timer would start in the third row outside for the thirty-lap feature.

In the thirty lap main event the race started off with Vitale taking the lead in the early phases and pretty much had the race won. The race seen six cautions and it seemed that Vitale was going to be unstoppable as the last yellow came out on lap twenty-four. On the final restart Whisler decided to take the high line and got around Don Muth Sr. of Cottage Grove for the second place position and had his eyes on the race lead. As they came around to take the white flag Vitale led Whisler but Whisler took the top spot out of the final corner to pick up his first win of the year in his second race at the Grove. Vitale finished in second followed by Muth, Randy Martin of Eugene in fourth, and Mark Carroll rounding up the top five.
