Scott Wolfe STEWART, Ohio (June 12) - The "Salt Rock Express", Eddie Carrier, Jr. (Salt Rock, WV) took top honors in the 40-lap $3,000-to-win Jack Shutts Memorial for Late Model s at Billy Jarrell's Skyline Speedway, Friday, June 12. In only his second night out in 2009, Keith Baxter claimed the 25-lap outlaw sprint main, and Jeremy Blake took the 20-lap Malta AMRA Modified crown. Tommy Murphy claimed his third Skyline main of the year in the Pure Stocks, Chris Lauer took the Four Cylinders for the second consecutive week, and Will Holland claimed the Mini-Wedges.
It was a very special night for a very special person, as Skyline Speedway honored long-time scorer and flagman Jack Shutts, who succumbed to cancer last fall. Looking like a pro in kicking off the event, Billie Shutts (wife of Jack Shutts) dropped the green for the start of the 40-lap main event. 18-year old Tyler Carpenter and Larry Bond paced the field to the waving green. Carpenter led the first go-round, then Bond led the next two before Carrier, Jr. burst into the lead.
By lap ten Audie Swartz in the Swartz Extreme Chassis House Car started to reel in Carrier as both parts of the dynamic duo broke away from the pack. Carpenter clung to a top three, but giving chase were a pack of hungry drivers.
Carrier inched away from Swartz as the midpoint approached, while back in the pack Zach Dohm worked his way up from tenth to third. Jeff Wood, T. Carpenter, and Ralph Withem battled door-to-door for the fourth slot. Bond and Layne renewed their battle from the highly contested heat race with a dual for seventh.
Carrier lapped all but the top five cars as he reared his chassis to the max. Carrier's Grover Motorsports/e.i Engines Incorporated/Rocket Ford continued to dominate to half-lap Swartz at the finish. Rounding out the top ten behind second place Swartz were Zach Dohm, Ralph Withem, Tyler Carpenter, Jeff Wood, Larry Bond, Kevin Layne, Steve Bigley, and Greg Oliver.
"We'll be back," proclaimed a happy Eddie Carrier, Jr. in victory lane. "I'd like to thank my Dad..my crew chief and Carl Grover Motorsports. We started out the night and we weren't that good. But we kept changin' things and working with the chassis. Dad gave me a good car by the time we hit the feature."
Besides a good race car, Carrier attributed the win to having patience. "I tried not to slip the tires and to keep it smooth. Once I found what the fast line was, I just kept the same line and tried to keep it straight. I had no idea I had lapped so many cars."
