Selinsgrove Speedway SELINSGROVE, Penn. (June 7) - Jeremy Miller of Gettysburg passed Jeff Rine of Danville, Selinsgrove Speedway's six-time late model feature winner this season, on lap 27 to win Sunday night's 40-lap Inaugural Appalachian Mountain Dirt Late Model Speedweek Series event sponsored by Jeff's Auto Body & Recycling Center.
The $5,000 victory was the first of Miller's career in a late model at Selinsgrove Speedway. A former Thundercar winner at the track in the early 1990s, Miller became the speedway's fourth different late model winner this season.
Selinsgrove Speedway hosted race two in the seven-race series that continues at a different race track each night this week. Austin Hubbard, a 17-year-old high school student from Laurel, Del., bested a strong field of 54 entries in qualifying with a lap time of 21.073 seconds. Rick Eckert of York, who won the second qualifier, withdrew from the main event with reported engine problems.
Josh Richards, the 21-year-old World out Outlaws Late Model Series star from Shinnston, W.Va., made a live appearance on SPEED's 'Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain' show from the track.
At the start of the main event, second-place starter Tony Adams beat polesitter Jeff Rine into the first turn for the lead. Exiting turn two, however, Adams drifted high, which allowed Rine to take the lead. Adams then stopped on the track with flat tire.
On the ensuing restart, third-place starter Jim Yoder, lined up behind Rine in second, tagged the frontstretch wall and rolled to a stop in turn one. This placed fourth-place starter Nick Dickson, fifth-place starter Coleby Frye, and seventh-place starter Jeremy Miller in tow.
The early laps of the race produced an intense battle for second between Dickson and Frye. On the eighth circuit, Frye held second and looked strong as he put in a bid for the lead. A lap later, Frye bobbled and allowed eighth-place starter DJ Myers to take over the runner up position.
Adams, who restarted the race on the rear of the field, made a strong rebound into eighth when his race car developed mechanical problems on lap 18. While pacing under caution, the red flag was displayed for a fuel stop.
When the race resumed, a war on wheels unfolded for the lead, with Myers being scored as the leader of lap 19. Rine quickly reclaimed the lead, with Myers, Frye, Miller, and sixth-place starter Jason Covert racing in the top five.
Austin Hubbard, who set fast time for the race, brought out the caution flag on lap 20 when his race car stopped in turn one. On lap 24, Myers also stopped on the track after making contact with Frye in a battle for second. When the race resumed, Miller passed Frye for second and set his sites on Rine.
On the 27th circuit, racing off turn four, Miller pulled alongside of Rine using the inside lane and made the winning pass at the start/finish line. The next several laps saw Frye pass Rine for second. With five laps to go, however, Rine took back the runner up position and attempted to reel in Miller.
At the checkered flag, Miller was victorious by two seconds over Rine, Frye, 10th-place starter Robbie Blair, and Dickson.
