Petaluma Speedway PETALUMA, Calif. (May 30) - John Silva became the Petaluma Speedway's first three-time feature winner of the season with a dominating performance reminiscent of his championship season here more than a decade ago. His 31st career victory, and third in five races this year, came without a serious challenge as the 25-lap event ran the final 22 circuits nonstop. The absence of yellow flags made Silva's effort to pull away from the pack a little easier and also magnified the superb battle for second place waged between unyielding veteran Rod Arnold and defending division champion Paul Guglielmoni, in which Guglielmoni finally won with a successful pass five laps from the finish.
Just behind the Arnold and Guglilemoni skirmish, Shawn DeForest and Richard Papenhausen diced it out over fourth place, with DeForest, who finished second to Papenhausen in both his heat and the trophy dash, holding the advantage until Lap 15 and not regaining it again until the last lap. At the finish line less than one-quarter second separated Arnold, DeForest, and Papenhausen. Sixth place went to Nick Perivolaris over racing legend, and former three-time track champion, Larry "The Sundrop Kid" Damitz, who celebrated his 80th birthday the previous week.
