MOWEAQUA, Ill. (December 20) - Following his split with Clint Bowyer Racing last week, Dirt Late Model ace Shannon Babb has turned his focus to owning and operating his own team in 2009. The 34-year-old Moweaqua, Illinois native has driven for various car owners over the past decade, so the switch to car ownership will be a daunting task. However, the transition was made easier today with the announcement that Shannon Babb Racing has joined forces with Sheltra Motorsports for the 2009 season.

"I am very excited today to announce this partnership with Sheltra Motorsports," exclaimed Babb today while returning home from a hunting trip to Mexico and Texas. "Richard, Grace, and everyone associated with Sheltra Motorsports are excellent people and it is a privilege for me to be aligned with their first-class organization. With Patrick (Sheltra) running primarily on asphalt, the decision was made to reallocate some of their dirt assets. They will be providing me with some equipment and manpower, which will make my transition to car owner a lot easier!"

Sheltra Motorsports (sheltramotorsports.com) is a three-tier Motorsports operation consisting of dirt and asphalt competition. Patrick Sheltra, a 22-year-old native of Indiantown, Florida competes on dirt with the UMP DIRTcar Series, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, and the World of Outlaws Late Model Series (No. 23); while also running a full schedule in the ARCA RE/MAX Series (No. 60) and a limited schedule in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Sheltra Motorsports ownership is combined of Richard, Grace, and Patrick Sheltra. The team is headquartered in Indiantown, Florida with additional operations in Richmond, Indiana and Whitesville, Kentucky.

"The Sheltra Motorsports team is ecstatic about joining forces with Shannon Babb in 2009," quoted Grace Sheltra. "Shannon is an excellent driver and we know his hard-charging driving style will produce numerous victories next year. It is a win-win situation for both parties and we look forward to assisting Shannon's dirt efforts in any way possible."

The Shannon Babb Racing team will most likely start out their 2009 season in Florida during "Speedweeks 2009," but that is not a given. Since Shannon is not running for points next season, there is no need to rush things in order to make it to the East Bay (FL) Raceway Park and the Volusia (FL) Speedway Park in early February. However, it is likely that you will see the "Moweaqua Missile" sling dirt at one or both of those venues to open up his '09 campaign. The #18 team will primarily utilize Rocket Chassis next year, but they will also have C.J. Rayburn racecars at their disposal.

"We will probably kick off 2009 in Florida, but we will see what happens in the next month or so," Babb went on to say today. "I am looking forward to getting back on track and winning races again. We will pick and choose our schedule throughout the year, but we will of course target all of the major races across the country, as well as the UMP Summernationals. The Summernationals is something I have always enjoyed doing and we will take a long, hard look at running the whole tour again this year."
