Winchester Speedway WINCHESTER, Va. (October 26) - The Winchester 200, postponed a month due to rain, had to be postponed one day when weather washed out Saturday's events. Steve Francis had collected fast time and a dash win Friday night, which would start him on the pole for Sunday's main event.
At the green flag for the main though it was outside pole sitter Gary Stuhler of Greencastle, PA taking the lead, his lead was short lived though as he was dispatched by Francis on lap five of the main event, from this point on Francis would begin to pull away from the field.
Stuhler meanwhile had to compete with a very strong Nathan Durboraw over the early laps of the event, with Durboraw and Stuhler racing side by side for several laps. Durboraw would eventually fade and would fall out of the race finishing 18 th on the field.
Bo Feathers, 2008 Champion, had to start the event from the 25th slot using a provisional, but he himself would drive up to a race high of seventh as the caution came out for the halfway break.
At the halfway mark it was Steve Francis in first, followed by Gary STuhler, Jamie Lathroum, Josh Richards, and Jason Covert rounding out the top five.
As the race returned to green it was Francis again pulling out to the big advantage. With 66 laps on the board the sixth caution would come out when Feathers slowed with a flat left rear while going for the fifth spot, Feathers would rejoin with the top five holding the same positions.
Feathers would be involved in the biggest incident of the evening when on lap 84 Jack Pencil lost a driveshaft and turned hard into the car of Feathers, with Feathers winding up on top of Pencil's #14, both would be ok.
This would be the final caution of the evening, with Francis again pulling away at the green. Stuhler continued his second place run, while Lathroum and Richards would battle for third.
At the checkered flag Francis would collect his first ever win in the Winchester 200 in his third attempt and first since 1995, Gary Stuhler would finish second with Josh Richard securing third position over Lathroum, Jason Covert would round out the top five.
Heats for the 53 cars went to Andy Anderson, Gary Stuhler, Jamie Lathroum, Jack Pencil, Nathan Durboraw, and Steve Francis. Steve Francis would collect the Dash win, with B-Mains on Sunday going to Jim Bernheisel and Ronnie DeHaven, Jr.
