MERIDIAN, Miss. (October 25) - Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa won an exciting 75 lap main event Saturday night at Whynot Motorsports Park. He took home the $15,000 14th annual Fall Classic just one week after winning $50,000 at the Dirt Track World Championship in Ohio.
"This is a fun race track" Birkhofer said. "This is our first trip here. We had a great time and a great car. We could race anywhere from top to bottom".
Wisconsin's Jimmy Mars took the lead over pole sitter Birkhofer in the early going, but Birkhofer kept the pressure on Mars as the two battled side by side for the lead on laps three and four.
The first of two cautions came out on lap seven as Louisiana's James Ward got upside down on the back stretch. Ward was not injured.
On the restart Mars lead the way with heavy pressure from Birkofer as the two would battle side by side for the lead on laps, nine, twelve and fourteen. On lap 16 Birkhofer wrestled the lead away from Mars and began to pull away until a caution on lap 32.
Following the restart Mars put heavy pressure on Birkofer as Mars would regained the lead on lap 36. The two battled it out side by side again with Birkhoffer retaking the lead for good on lap 40.
Arkansas's Billy Moyer started seventh in the event and by lap 48 passed Mars for second. Moyer would not have enough time to catch Birkhoffer and had to settle for second with Mars (third), Scott Slay of Clinton, MS (fourth), and Mike Boland of Cuba, AL (fifth).
Birkhofer also took home the McCool Logging $200 fast time award with a 13.225
Eddie Rickman of Columbus and Bub McCool of Vickburg were the B main winners.
Heat race winners from Friday night were Birkhofer, Boland, Mars, and James Ward.
Other Fall Classic winners were "The Bossman" Rodney Wing in the Open Wheel Modified, Lucky Keeton in the Crate Late Model, Kyle Rutledge in the Street Stock, Tom Coffman in the Mini Stock, John and Sara Mercer in the Cruiser.
